Unhappy Philips 47PFL9664 Calibration Required

Hi all. I've recently received my new Philips 47PFL9664 tv, and whilst I think the picture is extremely good, I can't help but feel the black level is no better than my 4 year old 37" JVC . I've used the calibration facility on a blu ray and played around a lot with the various settings, but that doesn't make much difference. Everything else about the picture is great, apart from the "grey" it thinks is black.

I'd really appreciate any help because I'm sure a TV like this should produce much better blacks, or maybe I'm expecting too much? A good example is when there is a predominately black scene and the dynamic backlight/contrast option is on, the screen becomes what I consider almost true black (i.e as if the tv is off) - however, as soon as something brighter comes on it reverts back to grey. I'm sure there is a way to reduce this gap?

If anyone thinks the blacks should be good on this tv via correct calibration and can travel to Reading please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

David

Turn the backlight down turn the dynamic cotrast/backlight off. That is probably how you get black as black as it can go.

Thanks Gordon, I'll try that out, however there is not an option I can see that directly controls the backlight; it seems this is "controlled" via the dynamic contrast/brightness options.

Hi Ricky,

I'm sure I've read a similar post on this forum about control of the backlight on this model so if you do a search on pfl9664 you may be able to find the article.

I am currently thinking of buying the 47PFL9664h but haven't been able to see one on demo anywhere. Please could you tell me at what distance you start to see any pixellation on the screen. I will usually be sitting 11ft away but also have a chair 7ft from screen so am worried what it looks like at this distance ?

Any advise much appreciated !

Cheers.

Hi, I would say if you have a decent sd source or HD then even at 7 feet it would be perfectly watchable. Ideally further back at 11/12 foot is probably ideal for a screen of this size.
