Pioneer 428xd calibration spyder 3

This weekend I was experimenting with calibrating my Pioneer 428XD with a Spyder 3 and HCFR Colorimeter. I followed the basic instructions from greyscale calibration for dummies and got some reasonable results however the greys in the IRE test patterns from my DVE blu-ray apeared to have a red tone to them.

This happened as it seemed to suggest I needed to boost the colour temp of my reds for both high and low, Im wondering if this red tint is correct or weather it might be that the spyder is not very accurate.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the results of my first calibration:

Luminance

Gamma

RGB Levels

Colour Temp

Re: Pioneer 428xd calibration spyder 3

I had a second try last night and got better results, the red issue seemed to be caused by the pioneer colour management so instead I adjusted it using the manual colour temp which worked really well.

I can probably get a bit more out of it but im happy for now

Will post my results if I get some time.

Do you realise that the Colour Management has nothing to do with adjusting grescale?

It is for adjusting the colour gamut the display shows and it should be used extremely sparingly as it has a detrimental effect on greycale linearity.

Re: Pioneer 428xd calibration spyder 3

Let us know how it works out. On these screens you should comfortably be able to get all greyscale dE's below 2. I would start off with all Colour Management at 0. When you're more confident you could try fine-tuning the secondaries and re-iterating, but as Gordon says be sparing.

Cheers,
Iain

Thanks, for your advice. Yes I realized that I was doing something wrong after reading another post by Gordon which was a great help.

I will post up my latest when I get back home tonight

Updated results, any advice as to how best tweak it from here would be appeciated. I did read that you can tweak the gamma but have not worked out how, do you need anything special to do this?

Luminance

Gamma

RGB Levels

Colour Temp

CIE Diagram

Re: Pioneer 428xd calibration spyder 3

Looks like you are making good progress
Grayscale could maybe use a touch more Red Hi, or lower Blue Hi.

To adjust gamma you need ControlCAL
ControlCAL
along with a straight-through serial cable and probably a USB-to-serial converter. (Without this you are limited to Gamma modes 1,2,3 in the user menu.) ControlCAL opens up the ISFccc interface through which you can set up the ISF Day and ISF Night memories per input. (They don't have to be for day and night viewing, just treat them as extra memories!) There are threads on the ControlCAL forums dedicated to calibrating Pioneer plasmas so they should help keep you right.

BTW are you using Colour Space 2, or Space 1 corrected with CMS? Colour Space 2 induces saturation errors so should not be used. If using 1 plus the CMS, you'll find that greyscale is harder to control and it's a personal choice whether it's worth using the CMS. I tend to leave primaries alone and just correct the secondaries.

Have fun!
Iain

Re: Pioneer 428xd calibration spyder 3

Thanks for your input, Im using colour space 1 and have left the CMS alone for now as it seemed to throw everything out. to get this far I mainly used the manual colour temp.

I was having a look through the control cal forum, looks quite interesting. Funds are a bit tight at the moment so getting my own proper meter and software might have to wait for now.

I will post up my current settings, I was going to do it last night only the girlfriend was watching it
