Question Streaming audio from Ipod Touch to hifi via bluetooth..?

Afternoon all,

Having bought a new 64GB Ipod Touch a couple of weeks ago (awesome compared with my 5 year old Ipod photo!) I am wondering about the feasibility of wirelessly streaming music from my Touch to my hifi. I have a dock but it would be great to be able to sit in the chair and use it like the ultimate remote control.

I'm a bit green when it comes to streaming, but see that the third gen touch has bluetooth capability built in.

From what I gather, A2DP is used for this. Can this be done whilst preserving good sound quality?

There don't seem to be many audio receivers on the market (which surprises me), but I did find this one:

XMAS/BIRTHDAY GIFT BLUETOOTH ADAPTER for iPOD DOCK on eBay (end time 26-Nov-09 23:29:36 GMT)

Does anyone know whether this would be worthwhile, or would I just be wasting 20 quid?

I don't want to find the sound quality is pants and if it's not going to compare favourably with a cabled connection won't bother.

Any comments/thoughts/experiences would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Paul

If you have a proper hi fi / home cinema gear4 make a receiver you just plug into the phono sockets.

I have just asked a similar question to yours actually so look forward to receiving other replies regarding quality

Re: Streaming audio from Ipod Touch to hifi via bluetooth..?

Audio over Bluetooth uses the A2DP protocol, which uses a lossy codec called SBC to encode the music before transmission.

So the music on your touch, which is presumably already in AAC or MP3 format, will be decompressed to WAV or similar, and then re-encoded with another lossy codec before being transmitted to the receiver. 2 stages of lossy encoding is not going to sound great - it's probably bearable with an in-car system or low-quality headphones, but it really isn't suitable for listening through a quality system.

You'd be better off using the free Remote application for the iTouch to control iTunes on your PC, and stream the audio via an AirPort Express to your hifi - that will give you the same quality as the original music files.

Are there any ipod wifi dongles out of interest for earlier ipods?
