what is this...

i have recently jailbroken by iphone 3g and when i connect to itunes the bar at the bottom that displays how much of the 16gig is being used, shows the following:

6.4gb Audio
6.6mb vidieo
171.2mb photos
639mb apps
3,78gb other

does anyone know what this "other" means??

Parts of the O/S, app. data, contacts, user data and other stuff. It can also be temporary files due to failed syncs, mine doubled after I accidentally disconnected during syncing.

Yours looks extremely high, I'd do a backup then a full restore to try and claim some of it back.
