dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

Hi,

This morning on my way to work I dropped my iphone 3g whilst getting in my car and the screen has smashed in the top right hand corner. The phone still works fully and the actually display is fine its just the glass top part that has shattered.

I was wondering if its worth repairing and how much o2 would charge for a repair. I don't have phone insurance and got the phone around 6 weeks after the launch of the 3g model.

If theres a new iphone for release soon I might just leave it but if I can get it fixed for less than £100 I'd certainly consider having the screen repaired.

Thanks for any help
Mark

I too dropped my iphone and have cracked the screen in the bottom right hand side.

I was in the apple store and they said - straight swap for new phone £199.00

I have mobile insurance through my bank and will go through that process soon.

Re: dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

for £200 i'll keep my phone as it is. its totally usable and just a smallish crack in the corner. I'm sure the new iphone will be out in a few months time and I can put the £200 towards that!

The new iPhone is due for release very shortly. No specific date has been set but the retailers i.e. o2 have been trying to shift their stock which further suggests that a new iPhone is due.

My Touch has been in a Griffin case since new, but most iPhone users seem to use them without. Out of interest, have you guys tried cases and discounted them?

Well the v3 software, but as to form no one knows. It was announced yesterday that all submissions for the AppStore will be evaluated in v3 so its 99.9% there probably. WWDC is also sold out again and that's about a month away so news will probably be announced there.

Re: dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

I've got on really well with the Zzapp iPhone film protection, and my 3G is "as new" underneath. The phone is kept in pockets with keys, pens and other WMDs!

Mind you I was geeky enough to order the film before getting the phone, and slapped it on ASAP!

Re: dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

why dont you just buy the glass off ebay and repair it yourself,
plenty of youtube video's about showing how to take it apart,

you will need to buy the Glass and Digitizer with it

OEM APPLE iPHONE 3G TOUCH SCREEN DIGITIZER+GLASS LENS on eBay, also Screens LCD, Other Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Home Phones (end time 09-May-09 13:00:00 BST)

that link is just to show what you will need,
so look around and can be bought from as little as 20quid,
as your lcd is working you dont need a complete lcd and screen replacement,

video to help taking it apart -

I tried the Griffin cases and some others but unfortunately i use an X-Stand to rest my iPhone on and if it is in the case it wont fit in the stand

Re: dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

thanks for the replies. will have a look at the glass and see about replacing it. i really couldn't live without my iphone now and would happily pay for a new one but whilst the damage is minimal and a new one around the corner paying £200 for a replacement is a little much. I use a belkin leather case and its always kept in there when not in use. I was in the middle of texting and went to open a car door and it fell on to the concrete floor. I was mad straight away as I've never dropped it before and though it might of marked it only to find the screen all cracked. not overly impressed with the durability but as it is a glass screen I suppose I shouldn't expect it to be indestructible!

thanks again.

Re: dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

I was going to suggest to DIY option too. Like already mentioned you can pick the outter screen and digitizer up from around £20 on eBay. If you look around, some of them come supplied with the necessary tools needed to open up the iPhone. Plenty videos of this being done on Youtube so it shouldn't be too hard.

Re: dropped my iphone 3g and smashed the screen :-(

Depending on where you live it could be worth buying the screen and digitiser from ebay and sourcing sme local mobile phone repair shops to see what the charge would be (obviously check the price before buying the sceen) as opposed to going to apple to have it repaired..

I say this because when i wa staying in newcastle every corner had a mobile repair shop and i felt my battery was not giving its best performance... so had a look online at some vids to replace the battery ad tbh those projects on opening the iphone and messing around with the inners are not for the faint of heart However there were options online to send the phone to repair company (by post) and they would change the battery and send back to me at a cost of £52 inc p&p

But by chance i took it to a local repair shop round the corner and they replaced and supplied the new battery for £20. no p&p Took it in on a saturday and collected it on monday. Think its at your discretion using some of these smaller shops but my phone came back without a mark on it,,However i have noticed recently that that particular shop has been closed 4 a few weeks now
