No you can change ringtones I know that, just can't message tones unless it's jailbroken.

Yes, its one of those annoying things about the iPhone.
you should try jailbreaking though, its relatively simple, safe, and if anything goes badly wrong you can always restore the default firmware back onto it.

This is one of my main gripes about the iPhone. I can't for the life of me see why Apple don't allow this - most other phones let you do this and have done for years - when moving to an iPhone its a little jarring to see such a simple feature missing. I love my iPhone but its almost embarrassing when recommending one to friends that it can't do custom message tones.

For what (I imagine) would be a relatively small change to the firmware they would make a lot of customers happy. In addition it could be another income stream for Apple - I'm sure plenty of people would pay for new ones in iTunes.
