Connecting to the internet: Data roaming/EDGE/3G

Hi All

I'm a little confused and was hoping somebody could clarify for me!

Wireless connection aside, am I correct in assuming that EDGE has to be enabled to connect to the internet?

I use SBSettings to toggle both EDGE and 3G and have found that unless EDGE is on, I cannot connect to the internet. (3G does not have to be turned on)

Is this correct?

Also, I read on another thread that the iPhone will connect to the net (in the UK) regardless of whether data roaming is on or off. Is this correct?

If so - how is the Data Roaming toggle in Settings related to the EDGE toggle in SBSettings?

Many Thanks

Re: Connecting to the internet: Data roaming/EDGE/3G

Data roaming is for when you are abroad and has nothing to do with data in the UK. Leave it switched off until you need it.

Edge will connect to the net - think of 3G as low speed broadband and Edge as a 56k modem.

Re: Connecting to the internet: Data roaming/EDGE/3G

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have realised that I am still unclear on how the iPhone connects to the net.

As previously stated, I use SBSettings to toggle wireless, EDGE and 3G.

If all the above are off, I cannot connect to the internet (is this correct?)
I can only connect to the internet if either Wireless or EDGE are enabled.

My question is: If I was NOT using SBSettings, how would I enable internet connection?

Yes that is correct. You are disabling all of the services that get the data into your phone

the Data Roaming toggle in the settings menu is there for when you go abroad and roaming on a foreign network - this will stop the phone from trying to download data (email) and preventing you from incurring a large bill

Think of SBSettings as a quick way to enable and disable the radios in the phone to prolong your battery life when not using them. I have hidden the EDGE toggle, and just have the 3G and WiFI toggles visible. When at home, I toggle 3G off and WiFi on, and when out at work I toggle WiFi off, then just toggle 3G on when I am using the phone - when I put my phone in my locker during my shift I turn 3G off as its not needed. The phone will then still download emails etc, but speed is not important as I am not using it! with EDGE left enabled in Settings it will toggle between that and GPRS depending on the signal. Both of those radios don't sap battery life that bad compared to the 3G radio.
Works well for me

Re: Connecting to the internet: Data roaming/EDGE/3G

Thanks ciandrews fro the reply.

Still confused.

The iphone manual states that the iPhone connects automatically to the internet when, for example, Safari is started.

This is not the case on my phone. Regardless of whether Data Roaming is on or off, the phone does not connect to the internet unless I enable Edge (or Wifi) via SBSettings.

If I therefore was not using SBSettings, how would I connect to the net?

Re: Connecting to the internet: Data roaming/EDGE/3G

If you disable EDGE and WiFi via SBSettings then your iPhone has no way to connect to a data server.

The iPhone does connect to the internet when you open Safari IF you havent turned the internet off, which you have using a 3rd party program.

On a "standard" iPhone there is no way to turn off EDGE.

Hutch, do you know if edge is disabled would a GPRS connection be available?
Thanks
