Q's about sms and installing apps

Hi there

I am now a proud owner of a 2g iphone. There are however a few Q's that i have.

1) iv noticed that unlike typing a tx in any other phone, the iphone does not give the length of the tx in a readout. eg. 44/100. so my Q is how do i know when i have exceded a single txt length and ahve moved onto a 2nd txt thus getting charged for 2 txtx?

2) My other Q is to do with installing 3rd party apps. I have installer icon already on my homepage but unsure what to do to get the apps onto the iphone and working. So far i have noticed that when my iphone is connected to computer (windows) and in itunes it shows up several folders, music, videos, ringtones and also applications. Do i just drag and drop apps into this folder for them to work?

Please help if you can in any way

Cheers

John.

Re: Q's about sms and installing apps

1) you don't. Basically

2) you just install apps from Installer and Cydia in the same way you do from the App Store app on the phone.

To access Cydia you need Wi-Fi, you can access the App Store via your phone's internet.

you do if you jailbreak and buy bitesms which is a much better sms app than the pre-installed one. it won't give you a countdown of characters but will tell you how many separate sms's will be sent as part of your message overall

Re: Q's about sms and installing apps

You don't need wifi to use either installer or Cydia - I've never had a problem installing or updating apps over the cell net, and mines a 2G so thats GPRS, not even 3G!

Obviously it's faster over wifi, but you don't HAVE to be connected to wifi to use them....

you can pay for it one off...£3.95. you only need to pay once your demo has expired so you can try it for free first.

you can also use bitesms to send texts...some of their charges for international texts are meant to be decent. for this you have to buy credit from them first.

i just use bitesms to send texts via my t-mobile contract though...

Re: Q's about sms and installing apps

Ill second the bite sms package too - great app and worth every penny. The ability to forward a text message is worth it on its own!

My only pet peeve with bite sms (and the standard iphone sms app for that matter) is the fact that if you a text to several people at once - and each person texts you back it all appears on the same text conversation - a few times ive mistakenly hit reply and sent a text - only to later find that ive sent that one reply to everyone i sent the original text too! What it should is to seperate who the reply is from under there contact name as it does a standard text.

apart from that though - biteSMS is a superb package and IMO well worth jailbreaking the phone for that single app itself.

Re: Q's about sms and installing apps

@step - thats because you can access those stores with a 3g iphone - for the 2g version you need wifi.

@brailer - see above mate... for a 2g iphone to access cydia youll need to be connected to a wifi network.
