Moving from 2g to 3g but never backed up before....

Hi,

My wife has an iphone 2g with loads of photos of our baby son and I just bought her a 3g.

She's never backed up the iphone before so I want to back it up then copy the settings over to the new 3g.

When I connect it to a spare laptop with a clean install of itunes, i get the option to sync it, but will this delete the settings because the itunes is blank or will it back up the phone settings to the laptop.

I really don't want to get this wrong so if you can help please do!

Thanks.

Kev

When i connected my iPhone to a fresh re-install of Windows and iTunes it happily deleted all my info from the phone.

I've never seen anyone going from 2G > 3G trying to backup from the 2G file. Not sure whether itunes would let you. I'm pretty sure the Apps wouldn't be available on the new phone (someone correct me if i'm wrong here?)

I've done exactly what the OP is trying to do. Plug in the phone (but don't try and do a sync!), right mouse click on it and select backup. Then once it's complete, plug the new phone in, activate it and do a restore from backup. The apps will transfer over without needing to re-purchase them (as will any photos, music files, movies, etc).
