Oh crap - iTunes can't read iPhone data?

So for some reason today I decided to see what a "non-iTunes" manager would be like for the iPhone, and downloaded one from Softpedia (Joboshare iPhone Manager) which let me look at and play media files on my iPhone fine. I then transferred a video to it using JoboShare which transferred fine.

However, upon tapping the iPod app on my iPhone (disconnected) it shows no music, no video's no nothing.

Everything else on the iPhone works fine - all my contacts, all my messages are there, photo's (camera roll) etc etc.

So I plugged back in an opened iTunes to re-sync my music and got this;

Now it won't let me do anything other than restore to factory settings. It won't let me restore from a backup or anything.

I REALLY don't want to restore to factory as jailbreaking and unlocking it it is a PAIN I could do without! I don't often use it for music playback, so from that point of view I'm not actually too fussed, but I am a little worried that I can't perform any backups of the contacts, calendar, SMS messages etc

Is there anything I can do other than a full restore to factory settings then re-jailbreak and re-unlock and have to install all apps all over again?!?!?!

J7MAN

I had that yesterday ( the calendar thing ) which is weird as ive never had it set up like that. Went into the "info" tab and the check box for syncing calendars with outlook ( in my case ) was selected. Now ive not set it like this so whether it was set when i updated itunes i dont know , yesterday was the first time since updating id synced the phone. Unchecked it and job's a good 'un.

Might be worth looking there fella in case its checked. Unless its suppsoed to be that is.

Re: Oh crap - iTunes can't read iPhone data?

No it's not that as I haven't updated iTunes or anything, and the calendar tick is never ticked. Also, if you look at the pic, I can't access anything in iTunes for the iPhone other than the RESTORE button, and even the capacity is greyed out - no name for my iPhone or anything either.....

It's only the music on the iPhone that has been comprimised, but as far as iTunes is concerned that's fubar'd something that stops itunes reading the iPhone - a database file I guess......

Looks to me like your only option is a restore.

Re: Oh crap - iTunes can't read iPhone data?

Yeah I thought as much

I mailed the support email addy of the company that made the software - got a typical reply back a couple hours later saying they apologise for the problem, they are "addressing it" but nothing that can be done. They did give me a free licence serial for the program tho lol! Yeah, it fubar'd my phone once already, so I'm gonna continue using it!

I think I'll wait to find out how long firmware 3.0 will be and the relevant QuickPwn hack, as I hate having to restore, rejailbreak and reunlock it.....

Re: Oh crap - iTunes can't read iPhone data?

Only got an iPhone last week and pretty much immediately "jail broke" it.

I then had a look around for what software I could use to pull themes downloaded to my PC over to my iPhone, as there seemed to be only a limited amount of them on Cydia.

Last night I decided to pull a video over from my PC to my iPhone to see what it played like (I used the software I'd downloaded, not iTunes). It seemed to work OK, but when I tried to sync my phone with iTunes, I was confronted with the same problem as Matt_C.

Well, I've just spent a couple of hours having to completely restore my iPhone back to its original state in order to be able to use the iPod functionality on the phone, which wasn't much fun.

I'm now very anxious about using any software other than iTunes for fear that something'll get corrupted again, as I don't want to have to go through the rigmarole of restoring my iPhone again any time soon.

As for "jail breaking" the phone, I'll no doubt do this again tomorrow...

It seems the 8.1 update is causing Calendar problems.

When i updated itunes, i lost everything in it!, it reverted to a clean install (itunes, not iphone)
so had to copy the itunes .xml, library file etc from a back up (not any music, data) which corrected everything. So its a bit flakey.

I had the exact same problem as you down to the T. Only difference was I used a different program for transferring music. But to the point. I found a solution. Assuming you have a jailbroken iPhone. Use ssh and delete the following directory /var/mobile/media. I just deleted the media folder. After this you should be able to sync from iTunes again. Note that it will create the /var/mobile/Media directory from scratch, and you will lose any music, videos, and photos currently on the phone.

This worked perfectly for me on a jailbroken iPhone that was upgraded to 3.1.2 and re-jailbroken. The message was "iTunes can't read [...]." Thank you very much!
