iPhone mail

Why when I read an email on my iPhone, it isn't marked as 'read' when I go on my laptop. And its the same the other way around!

It means I end up reading all my mail twice. Is this the same on everyones phones/laptops?

Re: iPhone mail

Little bit more info is required!

What mail are you using on your computer? ISP (such as email@tiscali.com / email@ntlworld.com / etc) or webmail (such as Yahoo, GoogleMail, Hotmail)

How are you accessing this mail on your computer? Mail application such as Outlook/Outlook Express, or via a web browser?

How is your iphone connecting to the mail server? IMAP or POP3?

My email is a hotmail account. I use the web, 'mail' on my mac, and my iPhone to read them. And its a POP3 account.

Thanks MattC

Re: iPhone mail

I believe this is to do with the iphone not using pop3 hotmail, it doesnt update if u was to delete on iphone, it wouldnt delete from ur online hotmail account, its merely a push function from hotmail to the iphone.

Somthings along these lines anyway.

Re: iPhone mail

Right, so on your mac you log into Hotmail in Safari and the mails are unread?

This is standard, and there's nothing you can do to change it. Jbuckman is on the right tracks - it's just a limitation of POP3. All that happens is a copy of the mail is sent to your iPhone. What you do on the after that does not sync back up to the Hotmail servers - so reading mails on your phone won't mark them as read in Hotmail, neither will deleting them. Likewise, when sending mail from your iPhone the sent mail won't appear in the "sent mail" folder in Hotmail in the web browser.

If it REALLY bothers you, get a gmail account and have your mail forwarded to it. You can set up custom "sent from" addresses in Gmail so that mail you send from it appears to have been sent from Hotmail and no-one need ever know you have a Gmail account. instructions on forwarding Hotmail to Gmail can be found HERE

I'll bet tho, that after using gmail for a only a short while, you'll forget about Hotmail and just use Gmail on your phone and on your Mac aswell It's by FAR superior and far more customisable to tailor for how you want email to work for you

Re: iPhone mail

Yep you need an IMAP email account for it to do what you want, POP3 just wont cut it im afraid.
