2 quick iPhone sim and damage questions

1. If I sold my iphone 3g could I definitely use the sim in any other phone with unlimited data etc as I do now in the iPhone?

2. If I keep my iPhone and ever break it and don't have insurance, how much would it cost to replace? Just £99 for a contact one but then use my old sim and link the phone via iTunes to my old iPhone account, or £350 for a PAYG one?
