Iphone: To buy or not?

Hi,

I am currently on orange and really want an iphone but am stuck on the 18month contract and have a while to go.

I was thinking of buying an iphone on 02 payg and then using it with my orange sim but am not sure whether this will work.
I have read several posts on this forum but cant make sense of it.

I understand there are two ways of doing it, using a sim adaptor or a software unblock (some local shop said they can unblock it for £30)

but my main worry is:

using either methods will i still be able to use all the features of the iphone such as appstore and itunes?

also will the internet functions still work? does orange support the net functions and 3g?

Also read about the different things needed to be done to software unblock it, would i have to do this everytime i software upgrade and how would it work with the sim adaptor?

also, which is the best way of using it? sim adaptor or software unblock?

any help will be much appreciated.

thanking you,

hh

I understand there are two ways of doing it, using a sim adaptor or a software unblock (some local shop said they can unblock it for £30) Yes, you can either use a sim adapter (which is what i am currently doing) or software unlock which has been made available and plenty of people have done it. using the sim adapter approach means the firmware of the phone should be on 2.1. unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee what a 3g iphone is on until you have made the purchase, opened the box and stuck your sim in the phone. i personally would recommend you look to software unlocking it yourself. i'm going to be doing mine in the next couple of days to avoid having to use the sim adapter.

but my main worry is:

using either methods will i still be able to use all the features of the iphone such as appstore and itunes? yes, you will.

also will the internet functions still work? does orange support the net functions and 3g? yes, they will. obviously if you want to go online then it's ideal that you have some kind of web access available as part of your orange contract

Also read about the different things needed to be done to software unblock it, would i have to do this everytime i software upgrade and how would it work with the sim adaptor? the sim adapter only works with 2.1 firmware. anything after that you would need to software unlock as far as i am aware. besides, you might as well software unlock anyway. you won't have to keep swapping your orange sim over to your o2 sim each time you want to do a sync with itunes.

also, which is the best way of using it? sim adaptor or software unblock? software unlock. i would avoid paying someone £30 if i were you and do it yourself.

any help will be much appreciated.

thanking you,

hope that helps!

Re: Iphone: To buy or not?

Buy one,
I am on the 3 network which is notoriously difficult but I just followed the instructions on Iclarified to jailbreak and unlock the phone and it worked first time and I have all functionality that the iphone offers.
The only problem I suffer is poor 3g coverage in my area which means it can be a bit slow to load unless I am on wifi. But I can't blame the phone for that.

Re: Iphone: To buy or not?

Thankyou everyone for your advise - i think im going to go and get it now - feel much more confident now....cheers all

One last question - Once unlocked - when a new update comes out will i need to re unlock it again or once done it will be fine?

Also, where can I find the internet settings for orange or are they already on the sim and i have to simply just insert the sim and its ready to go?

Cheers everyone for all ur help.

Take care & have a nice day

Thumbs up Re: Iphone: To buy or not?

I'm on Orange as well and it literally takes less than 2 minutes to get your iPhone to work on any network. For certain reasons I can't tell you where to get the software from (hmm.. Google!) but download QuickPwn, install Cydia - which comes with QuickPwn anyway and from within Cydia get an software called yellowsn0w (with a zero "0").
