Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

Hi,

For the last two days I have been unable to make calls, getting an immediate 'call ended' then 'call failed'.

After following Apple's advice, restore etc, I now have an appointment for tomorrow.

Having never done this before, what should I expect tomorrow?

Will it be taken in for repair? Will I get a new one? It is approx 4 months old.

Cheers

TB

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

Theyre top notch in the apple store, they'll generally be able to diagnose the fault during the consultation then they can advise you of timescales for the repair.

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

sorry to hijack this thread, but just had a thought, do you have to take everything with you if they are going to give you a replacement?

I dont have my headphones any more, my dad stole them!

also, I was thinking if i dont take it back, that would mean I would end up with two usb cables which would be extremely helpful!

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

After asking, I was told all I need to take with me is the iPhone.

Is this an indication it will be repair rather than replacement?

Just take your iPhone and no its not any indication, they will decide when you are there.

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

I took my macbook pro in as there were a couple of dead pixels on the screen. The guy run a program that fired solid colours on the screen and agreed that 3 dead pixels would constitute a fault. He checked the computer and found he had a new 15 screen instock and they had it fitted for me in half an hour. Got a receipt for the work and it was £369!! It was covered under the applecare though so its all good.

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

Well I am back from the Apple Store experience!

After checking the phone by some software diagnostics he decided to replace my 4 month old iPhone.

I was given a new looking one from a brown box (the standard, as all other people I saw got brown box replacements).

Although, it says 5 hours+ use since last charge, so may not be brand new.

Very happy with the experience and hope other feel the same if they are in the same boat.

Cheers

TB

Are there any marks on the phone at all? Chances are its a refurbished iphone

So instead of sending your phone off for repair and you waiting a couple of weeks without an iphone for it to come back they replace it with a fully refurbished one!

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

None of the replacement phones are refurbs, I have had it confirmed by email from Apple, they come in brown boxes minus all the other bits as this is the bit that goes wrong and it keeps the cost down.

O2 will most likely return it to apple for repair. If there's an apple store near you its defo worth booking a genius bar appointment.

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

When I bought mine the guy in O2 told me not to take it back to them if it was faulty. He recommended the Apple store, if they are not able to fix they will give you a new one.

Unfortunately its a 200 mile round trip to an Apple store so taking it back to O2 was my only realistic option, still waiting to hear back from them though....

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

took mine in today, really nice chap swapped my phone out for a new one.
interestly, when he first looked at it, he took one of those thinks like doctors use to look in your ears, and he looked in the headphone socket and the bottom connector. He said in the newer products there are two sensors that change when they get wet they change, so if you get it wet and dry it before taking it back, they can tell.
I said "genius" he said "look at the sign" and pointed to the genius bar sign. quick witted and a really nice guy, he's called Graham Simpson and works in the Princesshay store. Apparantly he's only a trainee, but my god he knows his stuff.

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

Hi, my iPhone 2G (Jailbroken & not on o2 iPhone contract) no longer rings, the phone just constantly go into mute mode and then on again constantly! The iPhone was purchased from Apple Store back in January 08 and jailbroken and not been activated on o2 iPhone tariff, so if I take it back to Apple, will they refuse to look at it for the said reasons? Has anyone (sucessfully)taken a Jailbroken iPhone back to Apple for repairs? Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

You'll be fine just restore it in itunes so you take the Jailbreak off.

If they ask (which they wont) just say youve been using it with an O2 PAYG sim.

I had mine replaced on the last day of it's warranty at the Apple store in Kingston.

The good point was it was replaced, the bad point was I pretty much had to fight to get it replaced.

They were trying to tell me that my phone ("according to their system") was registered in Dec 2007 and therefore over a year old and out of warranty (this was last month).

They then proceeded to tell me what "I" needed to do to correct this, which involved going away and contacting Apple Care/getting them to amend the details/making another appointment and going back to Apple store.

I politely pointed out that I didn't in fact need to so anything as I had a receipt in one hand showing that my phone is indeed under warranty and that same phone (proved by serial number on receipt) in the other hand-end of.

After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, the guy (somewhat reluctantly ) offered to replace the phone.

So the end result was fine, but getting there was a bit painful and to be honest I expected more from Apple.

just wondering if your iphone is sill under warranty, as mentioned before, just restore before you take it back....in fact a restore may even solve your problem
Mine is also unlocked & J/B so would be interested to see how you get on if it goes to apple...Keep us posted

Sorry just noticed that you bought it in January 08, so presume it is now out of warranty

went to the genius bar in apple bristol today, what an experience, i could live in that place , any way took the guy two minutes to say phone ways faulty and due to the nature of problem not fixable, and i got abrand new spangly one as a replacement,

but the guy before me, had ahome button fault on his, and with a little look at the portsthe Genius said it had water damage and is not covered by warranty,so he had to pay, but i beleive he only paid £130 so not as bad as full price,,,,,

oh and when i said about going to CPW or 02 to send phone back for repair he said yeh its about a three week wait for a replacement :-O

Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

even if you can turn up you will have to hope there is a time slot available, is it worth it when you can book the apointment online,

your asked to back everything up, pretty sure as long as your itunes is signed into your apple account your apps will get re applied to you at no cost if you paid for them,,,,

i used windows contacts for my numbers, and they were fine cant see outlook being any different,,

you wont regret going to the genuis bar, they are good people, word of warning thou, if your phone has had any water damage to it, they will know and any replacement/ repair will result in acharge, think to replace is about £ 130,,,,, just letting you know,,,

Re: Taking faulty iPhone back to Apple store, what happens next?

I have just noticed a small vertical crack appear on the back of my phone right above the usb/charge socket.

Def not dropped it and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise, I recall reading on another site that this is a fault and as such is covered by warranty

Is this true ?

even if you can turn up you will have to hope there is a time slot available, is it worth it when you can book the apointment online,

your asked to back everything up, pretty sure as long as your itunes is signed into your apple account your apps will get re applied to you at no cost if you paid for them,,,,

i used windows contacts for my numbers, and they were fine cant see outlook being any different,,

you wont regret going to the genuis bar, they are good people, word of warning thou, if your phone has had any water damage to it, they will know and any replacement/ repair will result in acharge, think to replace is about £ 130,,,,, just letting you know,,,

£130 i can live with, i dropped it in the sink, the whole thing wasn't submerged and it was 1 sec but its my fault. I've booked an appointment tomorrow but may try my luck and go today as i need to go into town anyway.

thanks for your reply

Do you think Apple would replace my 3G because there is dust under the camera lense? A little black mark shows up on every picture!!! Tried everything to get it out but no luck!

Is this true ?
Ive had exactly this for about 6 weeks now, also have not dropped it. Its about 1cm long, just behind the dock port on the back of the phone, right in the middle.
