Question 2G iPhone no longer touch sensitive: which part do I need?

Afternoon all

As per title really, the very bottom of my 2G iPhone is no longer touch sensitive. There's no visible damage to the screen as such - no cracks/scratches/etc. Does anyone know which replacement part I need, or perhaps something's just become disconnected-?

Just to add, my iPhone's outside its one year warranty - but I'm normally pretty good with this kind of stuff and have stripped & repaired small electronics before.

Cheers, Ben

have you jailbroke/unlocked it?

I was reading something yesterday about the top or bottom strip of a screen being rendered useless after a jailbreak attempt. The only way to sort it out was a complete wipe + original firmware reinstall

Re: 2G iPhone no longer touch sensitive: which part do I need?

Thanks for taking the time to reply

It has been jailbreaked/unlocked, but it worked fine for months & months and then this just randomly happened. I may have dropped it, I don't recall - but I certainly didn't update the firmware since it was first jailbreaked/unlocked. Also, after this happened, I assumed (hoped) it was a buggy firmware issue, so my friend flashed it with a newer version of the firmware - but the same problem persists. All this makes me think it's more likely to be a hardware issue, rather than a software one. What do you think?

Re: 2G iPhone no longer touch sensitive: which part do I need?

I have extremely limited experience with the iphone, I've had it for less than a few weeks - but from prior experience with ipods and phones in general i'd say if a firmware update/downgrade isn't fixing it then it's a hardware fault and you'll need a new one.

The probability of you being able to fix it yourself (if it's hardware related) is really slim, apple products are notoriously unfriendly to service and you'll void any remaining warrantee.

Here's the part you need:

TOUCHSCREEN SCREEN LENS DIGITIZER GLASS LCD IPHONE 3G on eBay, also Screens LCD, Other Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Home Phones (end time 19-Jan-09 05:44:45 GMT)

well this is for a 3g iphone, but sure u can get them for 2g.

it's a digitizer you need. (that's the part that that makes it touch senestive)

Re: 2G iPhone no longer touch sensitive: which part do I need?

I had exactly same problem, although mine was top half of screen.

Mine was also out of warranty by about a month.

Took it into an Apple Store where they replaced it free of charge there and then!!!!

I have never been on an o2 contract, but apple didn't seem to care.

Best example of customer care i have ever had!

Dont try to do it yourself, seen many professionals try and fail to repair the iPhone. Get it back to Apple and see what they say.

Re: 2G iPhone no longer touch sensitive: which part do I need?

If you're lucky you may not need anything at all. I had the same exact problem and fixed it using the information on this page:

iPhone Touchscreen Fix: Increase Sensitivity

I used these files:

general_info_plist.rar - Windows Live

Just follow the guidelines on the website I've given you and use the files I've given you. You have to be able to connect to your phone through WinSCP to do this. Go to the applications directory and rename the file general.plist to general.bak and touch.plist to touch.bak. Then copy the files I've given you to the same directory. Don't forget to apply the same read/write permissions as the other files.

Hope this helps!
