Another iphone 1st Gen firmware updating question

Hi iphoners,

I have a 1st gen iphone bought on ebay from the US not long after they came out. I have looked through the unlocking threads but they do not quite seem to answer my specific questions.

I am currently running firmware 1.02 (unlocked) and I have been happy with phone, but I have become aware that there are a lot of improvements I am missing out on.

My questions are....

1. Can I update straight from 1.02 to 2.2?

2. Since I don't know how my phone was unlocked do I still need to go through this revirginising process I have read about or will I be ok to just update and unlock? If I do need to revirginise then how do I do it? I have no installer on my phone and cannot get apptapp to work to install it?

After that I am reasonably happy to do the whole unlocking process with quickpwn having read on this forum and others how to do it.

If anyone can help me with their experience and knowledge I would be most grateful.

Yes you can update straight to 2.2, no revirginising needed.

I'm running 1.1.4 (4A102) on my Gen 1 UK 8GB iPhone, could I upgrade to 2.2 when prompted by iTunes without then having to do anything else?

Ta.

Yes but it'll be locked to O2 and not jailbroken unless you use Pwnage, Winpwn or Quickpwn

Thanks.

I'm on 02 Simplicity, so presumably I can just upgrade to 2.2 when prompted, not lose any features and just carry on using as normal?

Thanks, what would that mean to me though (I've kind of lost track of what jailbreaking actually does! )?

Re: Another iphone 1st Gen firmware updating question

You will lose Installer if you have it on your 1.1.4 phone, although its kind of been replaced now by a program called Cydia on the 2.0+ firmwares.

If you dont use any 3rd party apps dont worry about it, if you do just restore in iTunes then use Quickpwn to jailbreak - its very, very easy.

Re: Another iphone 1st Gen firmware updating question

Ok, all seems good!

However......

I've grabbed Google Earth (the icon is now on the front screen of the iPhone), but when I click it is shows the Google Earth splash screen for a couple of seconds then it closes.

Any sugesstion on how to fix this or what I need to do next?

Ta all.

[Edit] - I'll grab the latest version of Google Earth via iTunes and see what that does.

One thing tho-I've lost my iSolitaire!!

I clearly now need to jailbreak it so that I can redownload it-is that a Winpwn jobbie?

Thanks, I'll grab that now-any idea what the latest stable version number is (or a link ).

[Edit] - It looks like it's v2.2, so I'm grabbing that now.

I'll report back shortly!

Thanks again.

Re: Another iphone 1st Gen firmware updating question

Hmmm....

I've downloaded Google Earth/Facebook app/Lightsaber Unleashed via iTunes, but when I click on the icon on the phone they start briefly and then close pretty much straight away.

Am I missing something?

Re: Another iphone 1st Gen firmware updating question

Quickpwn is asking me for the location of Bootloader 3.9 & 4.6-should I have downloaded them seperately?

Mine does this sometimes with new apps I have installed. Sometimes a restart of the iphone does the trick, but in most cases I delete the app, then re install.

Hope that helps.

I'll give that a try in a sec (once I've finished running Quickpwn as I've found the bootloaders).

Cheers.

Quickpwn seems to have worked ok.

I've removed those apps and I'll regrab them now.

That seems to have done the trick, although Google Earth says it can't get on/find the network at the mo and Facebook just sits there at "Logging In" once I've entered my username/password.

The reason is (I think) a lack of network connectivity since the upgrade as I can't get online to any websites-despte showing I'm connected to my wireless LAN at home as usual.

[Edit] - Turning wifi on and off again seems to have done the trick.

Which do I use for 3rd party downloads these days-Cydia or Installer?
