Managing an iPhone with a PC (Mac-less!)

Hello all.

I am considering a switch from my Nokia N95 8Gb (and its very simple PC/Windows Media Player Interface) for a 3G iPhone. My only concern is how compatible it'll be with a standard Vista PC.

My iPhone-owning friends all swear by them but they all have Macs. Any comments or advice on managing one with a PC? (mainly media file management and any help on transferring contacts)

Thanks.

Re: Managing an iPhone with a PC (Mac-less!)

Hi

The experience is identical between Mac and PC as all the heavy lifting is done by iTunes.

The media file handling is a joy to use - but you will have a bit of a learning curve and it's vital you take time to understand iTunes. It's a great piece of software but PC users are often put off by it initially because it isn't very 'PC' like...

Which application are your contacts stored in? You shouldn't have any problems syncing them but I might be able to give some specific advice.

Steve

ps. after a week of using the iPhone and iTunes, you will want a Mac anyway...

Cheers for that mate. I haven't stored my contacts outwith my phone yet. I have been told that I should be able to Synch my N95 to Outlook, then import that into the iPhone. is this accurate?

Regarding the mac, ironically enough I'm buying a new laptop next month, but I have been put off by my frustrations at using my mate's. I think it's just force of habit. Having been a PC user for many years, ten minutes on a Mac and you feel like a complete IT novice.

Another point (if you don't mind), can you manage your iPhone on more than 1 pc? I have my nokia software on my work pc as well but I've been told that you have to register your iPhone with a specific pc/mac. Is this true?

Thanks again for any help and advice.

Yeah you can sync your contacts via Outlook to the iPhone, I had to do that between my Sony Ericsson and my iPhone, seen as you can't just bluetooth the lot!
I only use my iPhone on one PC but I believe that in terms of the music library it can only have one "home" library and that if you connect your iPhone to another PC if it syncs it will wipe your music, thats my experience with iPods anyway.

Hmmm. Does your iTunes library only work with one device then?
My wife has an iPod and it recognizes her device info (name, serial no. etc). Would i be able to use that application with my iPhone or would i need two separate applications to manage each device?

Your library will work with more than one, I have an iPod Classic, iPod Shuffle and iPhone all working off the same PC.

Re: Managing an iPhone with a PC (Mac-less!)

Right, I'm sold. I'll be ditching Vodagroan tomorrow and taking the plunge with an iPhone.

Thanks again for all your advice. It's my first time on something like this and it's been really helpful. I was just getting nowhere asking any in-depth "user" questions to the people in O2 or Carphone Warehouse cos they're only familiar with the basics which I could get from any brochure.

And yes, me and my wife have similiar music tastes....she loves Boyzone too!

Re: Managing an iPhone with a PC (Mac-less!)

It is going to be the greatest single piece of technology that you have owned in a long time. It's been said before but i'll put in another post...

It doesn't do anything radically different to any other phone, it's just what it does it does really really well.
Other PC thing to use are ... Zenbe (lists on iphone and online which can also be shared with anyone), Google calendars with outlook & neuvasync (push calendar update which can them be updated on pc, net or iphone.)

Enjoy, you'll love it.
