Next 'new' Iphone release?

Hi Guys, about to pull the trigger on a new phone and the iphone is on the list up against the contender from SE - the new X1.

Before I decide, are there any rumours about regarding the next version of the iphone? 32gb?

Thanks for any info you can bring to my attention!

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

Rumours of a 32GB at MacWorld in Jan, with the new 2.2 firmware.

Other than that, not a lot. Not heard anything about a new one, but you never know with Apple..

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

Interested to know this too. I've got a 32GB ipod Touch so if they brought out a 32GB iPhone then I could sell my Touch and make the swap over.

Also do Apple bring out a new iPhone every year? They brought out the 3G one a year from launch of the 2G one. If so it might be worth holding out till the summer to potentially get the new hardware of a new iPhone. Better camera etc perhaps.

Apple have unusually recently announced that there will be no more new products this year. Probably down to all the iMac rumours that might have been putting people off new products.
In terms of 2.2 firmware - this is in Beta already and expected in a week or so.
It would be a bit unusual to announce a 32G at MacWorld - they usually go for something bigger but who knows? If you take the plunge now I doubt there will be much risk. The 32G will probably cost a lot more - iPhone has just gone no1 in the states for phones sales so I doubt there desperate to release one at a great price.

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

What can a new iphone bring for existing users wanting it? that cannot be done via a firmware update...

- Capacity size

- Better camera

- Video recording - can be done via software on current models.

- can't think off anything else.

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

Agreed. Other than capacity and camera the hardware side is pretty much spot on.

It's the software side where all the improvements need to be made! Even video recording can be fixed via the software I should think, even that's not a hardware issue. Loads of the features available under jailbroken phones such as sms apps that actually work as they should with forwarding, delivery reports, able to delete individual messages etc, an mms app and the ability to create contact groups so you can send group emails/sms need to be made available as standard on the iphone.

The only thing I would upgrade for right now would be bigger battery, maybe replaceable battery in future?

A2DP Bluetooth

Bluetooth file transfer

A bigger, and better screen - if the Touch HD can do 3.8" at 480x800 then the iPhone can

NVidia's new Tegra chip to enhance 3D graphical performance

DVB-H Tuner - useless for these shores, but it'd be a nice bonus for other countries

A second form factor - not everyone wants a HUGE phone, i'm expecting a slider or a folder to be announced at some point.

There's plenty that Apple can do with the phone. Those are just off the top of my head (and obviously not a single update, there's a good 2-3 years of updates there at the rate Apple go )

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

A2DP is probably a no, it requires a more advanced BT chip. I don't know if the iPhone chip is capable of A2DP or not, but at a guess i'd say no as there's no reason for it not to be enabled...

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

I'm getting really impatient now and thinking about just buying the iphone 16GB on payg tomorrow
but i just can't help thinking about a possible announcement at macworld for a 32GB iphone...

so, my question is, even if there is an announcement at macworld for a 32GB iphone, how soon would i be able to buy it???

if its a question of a couple of weeks or a month, then i'm prepared to wait but if its not going to be until summer at least then i'll just go out and get one tomorrow....

any thoughts

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

But also do you see yourself filling a 32gb iphone? not sure if then it will be more expensive than the current 16gb model or same price structure.

Isnt Apple doing some event in Jan, i heard they were... personally i think its too early or silly in the year for Apple to unveil a new iphone, especially when thousands must off just bought 'older' model this xmas gone.

Then might be worth waiting to hear if they unveil anything apart from just extra storage on an iphone.

i've already got about 15GB on my ipod, so by the time i move it over onto the iphone i'm gonna have a gig or two left.
Also, even though apple claim it's 16gb, how much free memory do you actually get, as i'm sure the apps on the phone take up a little space...(maybe just under a gig or so)

apple have got their annal expo on from 5th jan to 9th (next week), its actually their last one so whether they have any last surprises is anyones guess...

but the question still remains, even if apple do announce a 32gb, how soon do you think it will be on the market...because if its more than 3/4 months then i just can't wait that long....

but a wait of a month or so could be bearable...

I've heard the BT chip can do A2DP, it just doesn't have the profile for copyright reasons.

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

I very much doubt Apple will release a 32GB iPhone so soon, think the iPhone 3G only came out in July last year. They'll want to cash in fully on the device first before bringing out the bigger version.

I'd be expecting a 32gb to be announced next week and possibly even multiple colours as well. A new iPhone model though won't be announced till later this year though I reckon going on past Apple product cycles.

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

A 32gb version just isn't enough of an improvement to get me to change from my 16gb 3G, especially if I have to start a new 18 month contract to get it. 16gb is enough for now until they completely revise the 3G hardware.

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

just done the dirty deed and bought a payg 16GB from apple store today...

i asked the sales assistance about any news on 32GB, but was none the wiser, however, in case of any announcements next week, he advised i have a 14 day money back guarantee....
so if there is news of 32GB next week, then mine will be heading back to the apple store for a refund....

until then...my dirty fingers is gonna give it some serious foreplay....

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

Hmmm I am tempted to return mine now within the 14 day period and just get another in Feb as I still have a Vodafone contract with another phone till then.

Hopefully a 32gb one will be anounced in the meantime!

Also does anyone know if iphone will be available on other networks soon? I hear that O2's exclusive deal ends early this year?

Video calling? (i.e camera on front too)

I know it's not been the hit that it was suppose to be so many years ago when it was launched, but I think if anyone were to do it right it would be Apple. You've got the big screen on the phone which would be perfect, and put that alongside with an iChat style interface, then it sure would be cool.

Apart from that, I think firmware updates can easily sort a lot of people's grievances with the phone.

Hi mate,

I went from an o2 contract to an iPhone o2 contract. I didn't need a PAC code, my number transferred immediately to my iPhone sim.

Everywhere is as standard price for the iPhone. If you go on the more expensive contracts (£45 a month or more) then the actual phone is sold at a cheaper rate (8gb free, 16gb £69 I think).

£10 a month insurance is steep. I'm with Nationwide for my home insurance, and managed to get it to include my iPhone for only a few pound more. So it may be best to try your insurance company first and see what they say.

White or black? My sister has the white one, and I do like the back of it, however the front is still black, which to me looks little odd. Each to their own I guess.

As for upgrading if a new iPhone comes out then it's a bit up in the air, as it's only really happened once so whether this will always be the case is anyone's guess. When the 3G iPhone came out, all exisiting iPhone customers could get it, but would have to start an 18 month contract again (the other one in theory was cancelled). So I sold my old 2G iphone for £250 and then spent £169 on a new 16gb 3G one. Worked out well in the end.

There is a chance of a 32gb iPhone being announced tomorrow. So if I were you I'd maybe hang tight for a day or so.

Cheers

Craig

Re: Next 'new' Iphone release?

I just switched my current o2 contract to an iphone contract as well when I bought a payg from ebay (quite a good price too!!!!) and now have the year's free wifi and data surfing (but make sure they take off any previous web bolts ons as apparently they sometimes forget!)

It's the software side where all the improvements need to be made! Even video recording can be fixed via the software I should think, even that's not a hardware issue. Loads of the features available under jailbroken phones such as sms apps that actually work as they should with forwarding, delivery reports, able to delete individual messages etc, an mms app and the ability to create contact groups so you can send group emails/sms need to be made available as standard on the iphone.
which sms and mms apps do you use? i use bitesms but don't think you can create groups

found out xmas time that when i sent a general text to about 30 people some had replied whilst it was still sending the text but i couldn't tell who had replied as it just kept it in the same conversation without telling me who it was from!
