Got the 8gb iphone today and all seemed well but after charging it up to full and leaving it alone for an hour or 2 I picked it up and pressed the home button,nothing but the white apple logo flashing on and off every 5 or so seconds.

Then tried pushing the power on button, no change,

Then tried holding down the power button for at least 6 seconds ( then 10 ), no change.

Then tried the hold both home and power buttons together, no change.

Plugged it in to wall charger and after about 10 seconds it vibrates and then loads the main screen but the red slider comes up by itself to turn off the phone. I can cancel that and use the phone.

Then I try to turn the phone off with the power plugged in and it just goes to the apple logo ( no red slider )

Does it still display the apple logo every 5 seconds when its off or is this the sleep mode as I cannot get the screen to turn off completely?.

To then get back to the main screen I have to unplug the charger and plug it back in, then it vibrates and loads the main page.

Surely this cant be right? As it is I cant turn it on or off without the power charger plugged in and if I leave it without charger more than 10 minutes I have to use the charger to re boot it

Any ideas, am I missing something or is it going to have to be returned to O2?

If its of any use I have had a 16g Iphone for a while now and I dont think anything you have described is normal!?!

I have not had any hassle except for after updates, sometimes applications make it hang. You then either update the application if available or remove the application...

I think I would be returning it to O2 smartish!!!

But can anyone tell me if the phone is switched off, does the white apple logo continue to flash on and off every 5/10 seconds? or is this the sleep mode?

I also think the online user manual is woefully lacking detail.

When the phone is off (after you "swipe" the red bar) there is no screen display at all.
It is awoken by pressing the on button at the top of the iphone (holding it in) then the phone reboots and the apple logo is displayed until its ready and it switches to the normal operation screen.

I have not seen a "flashing" apple logo...

Didnt think it was normal!, just playing around with it now ( getting confused with which buttons Ive pressed and whether the charger was or wasnt plugged in ) but Ive managed to get the screen to switch off totally but only with the charger plugged into it.

With the phone on ( no charger plugged in ) pressing the on/off button or holding it down has no effect.

With the phone off ( no display or apple logo flashing every 5/10 seconds ) no button or button presses will turn the phone on.

But if I just plug in the charger and dont press any buttons it boots up to the main screen but the red slider to switch off comes up automatically.

I cannot get the red switch off slider to come up any other way.

It seems like the on/off button does not work

I think the take it back option is your best bet!!!

Another thing, what colour should the battery icon be top right?

I remember seeing it when I first played with it and it was solid green ( and whenever Ive looked at my friends iphone) but ever since I tried to turn it off its been all white, is this also odd behaviour?

My battery is white (reduces as it drains)
White with a black lightening strike across when its on charge.

Big green battery across the main screen on charge.

My battery logo was green when I first got it and did so for about 2 weeks then it decided to turn White.No idea why.

Just took the phone back to O2, after the 3rd time of explaining whats wrong and being asked " have you set it up on your PC?" the guy finally decided to take it out the back to show the manager because "he knows about these phones" !!

Guy came back and said " its faulty"....no **** sherlock!

Gave me a replacement but now have to wait 2 days to test it as Im away from home till thursday!

Glad you have managed to finally (hopefully) sort it!
