Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

Found this and it works.

Quit iTunes and open terminal and type "defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false" without the quotes, then open iTunes again and the backup option is available.

Thought it may be useful.

Re: Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

Go into applications then find utilities. Terminal is in there. Double click on it and it opens a sytem window (a bit like the run - cmd in windows)
Paste the text and hit return. Then restart iTunes and you'll be able to back up your iPhone.

To be honest, I can't understand why they removed the option in iTunes 8.

EDIT: And no, it's not a stupid question.

Re: Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

Terminal is a Mac application, so if you have a PC then don't bother looking, you'll be a long time

Maybe there's a way of doing it with command prompt for PC users?

Yes - apologies. I should have made it clear that this is specific to Macs.

Re: Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

what is the best way to back up my phone?

If I make a backup of a jailbroken device can i just restore it in itunes or do i have to go through a restore and then jailbreaking again?

I ask because i got my 3G yesterday, did the business with it, got it set up how i like it, then borked it while playing with the file system. So i've restored and jailbroken it again. So once i've got it setup again is there an easy way to back it up and restore so i dont have to rebuild it again.

cheers

Saves a backup of your iPhone on your computer. Then after having to reinstall the firmware you can restore the phone to it's previous state - not just songs, videos etc., but also things like sms and preferences.

If there is a backup file available, iTunes should recognise that the phone has previously been synched and should offer to restore from the backup.

But iTunes does this as standard. Everytime I sync with it, it creates a backup. I've restored once already and then restored the backup and all my SMS and settings were there...

Re: Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

iTunes 8 seemed to remove this. Certainly once I upgraded from 7.whateveritwas my iPhone was never backed up and I had no option to do so. That's why I went looking for the fix.

Re: Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

Yes same with mine. Everytime I sync anything, be it contacts, music, pictures, apps, anything, it does a new back up. I have my latest "auto" back up listed, as well as the "forced" back up I did when I first got it.....

Re: Fix for no backup option in iTunes 8

When I try this fix I get this message: 2009-07-08 15:25:20.524 defaults[569:10b] Rep argument is not a dictionary Defaults have not been changed. Has Apple already figured a work around? Man this is frustrating. I had my Touch jailbroken, then I tried to do too much with SSH and had to re-install everything. I can't find the jailbreak source I used originally, and now I can't even get 3.0 firmware installed. I would pay, but I don't have a credit card. Getting really frustrated.
