Iphone is dead....

I've got a problem with my 2g Iphone that I'm hoping someone can help me out with....

I plugged the phone into charge this morning and got nothing from it via the Onkyo dock I have, so I treid the AC adaptor and still nothing. I then tried the PC and again, nothing. I left the phone all day in case it would charge, but was still flat when I got home.

When I got back in from work tonight I read through a few ideas and found out that if i moved the silent switch and then held home and the sleep button the phone powered up and the PC detected it and it appeared in itunes.

All the content in the phone is present and the phone itself is working because text messages came through and moving the silent button makes the phone vibrate. However the screen is completely dead :-(

It was bought off of ebay two short weeks ago and was jailbroken and unlocked. I feel like crying to be honest, can anyone recommend any steps, will I have a chance with an Apple repair or has anyone used a repair company advertising on the net?

Thanks

Grant

EDIT: I can ring the phone, it rings but the screen is dead :-(

Re: Iphone is dead....

Is it from the UK?

If you can reflash it in iTunes (so that its not jailbroken) then i would imagine that its still under warranty.

Maybe someone else can confirm that? just a thought.

good luck

Yeah its from the UK. I made sure of that before I purchased it. Thing is, I don't know where or when it was purchased and any of the details of the contract.

Also, after a quick search, the nearest apple store to the northeast is sheffield. Could I just take it to the local carphone warehouse, or am I better off calling Apple themselves?

Thanks again

Grant

Have you got it on an O2 iPhone contract?

Re: Iphone is dead....

call apple, in my experience they don't tend to be too fussed about who actually purchased something, just that it's in warranty, I've yet to be asked to be shown proof of purchase or anything on my couple of dealings with apple warranties.

I'll give them a call tonight after work and see what they can do

Would it be better to have a 02 PAYG sim card at the ready in case they ask any questions regarding operator etc?

Re: Iphone is dead....

Well, I've rang apple, they suggested a restore, which I have done and still nothing, phone functions in itunes but screen is dead.

After some more research around the net it looks like its been water damaged, the sensor in the headphone is about a quarter pink.

Will this affect the warranty, I don't have a clue whats happened to it, I think its been damaged in the house and the guilty party is keeping queit

I wonder if I use the fact I've been out in the horrendous weather and my clothes were soaked etc etc.

EDIT: I put the phone into DFU mode and restored to 2.0.2. Will apple know its been unlocked/jailbroken. Is there anyway to reverse bootneuter without actually using the iphone?

Looks like it will also have to be sent away, our local Apple store is 2 hours drive away. Is it worth the drive or shall I send it?

Re: Iphone is dead....

If its water damaged you are going to have to pay for the repair and no if you have restored it then they wont be able to tell if its been unlocked.

A bit of an update, the screen has sprang back to life this morning. Back light seems to have gone though. My luck once the phone has been restored! I'm gonna leave it a couple of more days to see if it drys out any more.

If it has to go back all I'm worried about now is the baseband

Re: Iphone is dead....

It may be "too little too late" (hope not !) but it just might be worthwhile powering the device off and putting it in a bag of rice (uncooked !)for a couple of days to dry it out. Quite a few threads on other boards about wet/damp iphones being resurrected this way.

Good idea, thanks, I'll try that!

EDIT: Just rang apple, they wont touch it if its water damaged, she recommended claiming on the house contents insurance, and because they no longer sell the 2g, the likelyhood would be they would me upgrade to a 3g!

First time I've dealt with Apple support and have been very impressed with the service

Re: Iphone is dead....

Well I've bitten the bullet, payed my way out of my last 6 months on t-mobile and gotten the 3g phone with an o2 contract. Thanks to all in the thread who helped me out.

The 2g phone functions but the backlight is still gone, even after the bag of rice trick. I will try and get what I can for it on ebay

Re: Iphone is dead....

I read somewhere that if you put a droplet of bleach down the earphone jack , it returns the water damage sensor to its original colour.

My monthly tarriff for each month left on the contract. I've had a lot of trouble with them in the last couple of weeks so was sick, had the money, and went ahead.

I don't know how much it would be worth, like I say, it functions fine, other than the backlight.

Unless you're very sure that it's water damaged, I'd suggest you treat it as hardware failure due to unknown cause (& of course never suggest it might be due to water)

My jailbroken 2G iphone developed screen "freeze", wouldn't respond to touch. I removed the installer icon to hide that the iphone was JB & brought it to Apple store. The Genius was satisfied that the iphone was still in v.good condition & since it's hardware failure, replaced it with a new one. He wanted to restore the new iphone in-store with the original sim card but of course I told him the sim card is not available/left at home & he gave me the iphone to restore back home

Re: Iphone is dead....

So I've been searching for threads with similiar problems to mine and I came across this.

I'm having problems with the mic on my iPhone and people can barely hear me. The phone is jailbroken and on O2 but not an iPhone tariff. If I restore it and take it to Apple I am worried about the baseband, will that give away the game?
