iphone and 3g sim

looking at getting a 1st gen iPhone, and was going to stick my 3G O2 pay monthly sim in it. would there be any problems with the iphone not working right? as in not being able to surf via wi-fi. would i have to activate my normal 3G O2 pay monthly card via itunes? any tips would be great
