iPhone O2 question

I've read on many forums that inorder to have 3g capabilities on the Iphone you need to have a 3g iphone enabled sim.....hence people on Simplicity tariffs can get the iphone to work, surf etc....but can't surf via 3G.

I presume one can buy a 3G sim card on PAYG in an O2 store, but can I then call up and ask to be put on a simplicity tariff or would I get sent a new sim?

I'm trying to see if there is a way of getting the phone on PAYG and then moving onto a simplicity tariff and avoid the £35 a month iphone contract.

I dont think they will allow you do that, you will have to take a o2 payg tarrif, you can pick the one you want, however it comes set to Favourite Place tarriff which gives you 500 mins to any UK landline or O2 mobile from a registered postcode if you top up £10-£14 a month, if you top up £15-£29 you get 1000 mins to any UK landline or O2 mobile from a registered postcode and if you top up £30 you get Unlimited* mins to any UK landline or O2 mobile from a registered postcode. Plus your free internet.

Re: iPhone O2 question

Just read on the iphone webpage that existing contract O2 Customers need to just put their old sim card into the iphone and it will work immediately. So I'm guessing that you can buy a PAYG iphone, then sign up to simplicity at some point and everything should work, unless they have to activate something on your sim to allow you to use 3g.....I suppose all we be know next week......

you might be right for 3g calling, but for 3g internet and wifi acces you will need to use the sime provided and get your number ported accross.

Re: iPhone O2 question

Look on your simcard, if it says 3G somewhere in the serial then it is capable.

Re: iPhone O2 question

All modern o2 sim cards will support 3G so you will be OK.

Re: iPhone O2 question

I'll be kkeping an eye out for some kind of official confirmation of this, as I've currently got an 8GB Gen 1 jailbroken Iphone with my 02 Simplicity sim in it.

I want to keep this tariff as it gives me 1200 minutes and 1000 texts, along with the free web bolt on, all for £30 per month.

If I could keep that and use it in a 3G PAYG iPhone, I'd be a happy bunny, but I'm sure 02 will make it difficult somewhere along the line.

Newer than 3 years ago, its a pain mine was a non 3g one. I've just got some free from o2 and transferring my old number to the new 3g sim card.
