iPhone 3G vs new Touch

I was thinking about getting the new (2nd generation) iPod touch 16GB, but my friend is heading out to the states soon and I was thinking she could get me a 16GB iPhone instead - but I am still undecided and hope to get some advice to convince me either way...

The new ipod touch seems to have some new features that the Iphone doesnt have, such as the genius thing, the Nike part, longer battery life? etc, but what does the Iphone have that the Touch doesnt (camera, 3G?)...what other differences are there...

Is it annoying carrying around the iPhone as a phone, is it going to be hard to take care of and not to scratch. Can it take a bit of abuse? Could you take either of them out running or to the gym?

If I jailbreak the iPhone and stick in my monthly O2 sim, how does the 3G and wifi work and will I be charged for that and how much? (if I dont change my contract to include these)

How good is the Iphone at mp3 playing, video playing etc - is it the same is the new touch?

They are both the same price in the states at $299.

Thanks for any advice.

I just cant decide

Re: iPhone 3G vs new Touch

OK here goes (in your order):

I have both versions of the iPhone and the "old" touch:

Camera - yes obviously there is one in the iPhone, it is 2 megapixels, no zoom or flash but it takes food pictures in good light.

3G - so you are not limited to Wifi zones and when you get 3G it is lightning fast.

Can it take abuse - I thought long and hard about a case and compromised on one that I use when traveling but for the rest of the time I do not use a case. It is fairly resilient but smears easily on the back and front. The screen needs little protection - it is very scratch resistant.

Jailbreaking I do not know about.

You get all the updates free on iPhone but have to pay if you have a Touch. The screen on the iPhone is coloured differently to the Touch and iPhone 2G. I much prefer the 3G iPhone screen - better colours and blacks, however they may have also changed the screen on the Touch v2 to match the 3G iPhone.

No question for me - iPhone it has to be, using mail on the go, e-mailing notes, surfing wherever and whenever plus - not having to carry a phone and an iPod made a big difference for me.

Hope this helps.

Re: iPhone 3G vs new Touch

Thanks for that - did you get yours via O2 contract?

I am just wondering if I stick my o2 sim in (after jail breaking) how the 3G works (if at all) and how would I be charged.

If 3G is going to cost me money to use then it wont be used! Its thats simple

NB it also seems that you cannot get an Iphone now in the states without signing up to a contract first...cant just walk out of the store with one like you used to...

Yep - I took out a new O2 contract, the wife keeps her old one (will upgrade soon). I have not jailbreaked but from what I read you can do exactly what you say with your current sim.

Re: iPhone 3G vs new Touch

First of all you can't buy an iPhone in the US without taking out a 2 year contract with AT&T. Secondly the 3G model can only be jailbroken and not unlocked at the present time. Jailbreaking allows you to do things like install unofficial third party applications but does not allow you to use sims from other mobile phone companies.

Re: iPhone 3G vs new Touch

also just to clarify, the iPhone DOES have the new genius feature with the recent firmware update like the new iPod Touch.

The only thing then really is the included Nike+ on the iPod touch which is not on the iPhone.

Re: iPhone 3G vs new Touch

I'm going through the same thought process..

- iphone has GPS the touch doesn't. I'd love GPS I've been thinking of getting a Tomtom for a while but couldn't justify the extra expense of buying a separate unit.

- You can get a 32gb touch but the most on iphone is 16gb. Which I've got to say is rubbish. I've got about 32gb's of music. So I'd have to limit myself to about 1/4 of my collection so I have space for apps, vids and photos etc. This for me makes the 16gb useless.
