Web browsing on iPhone

I was just wondering what people think about the web browsing in general on the iPhone?

In particular, how does it handle displaying the AVForums website, both browsing and posting, is it any good?

I've managed to avoid the iPhone for a while now for fear of buying one, but temptation is getting stronger! So just wondering if it's actually going to be practical for my use!

If anyone can help with some opinion, that would be great.
Thanks

Re: Web browsing on iPhone

It works perfectly well, I'm replying on my iPhone now. It's not the quickest site to load though even using 3G, each page appears to have a high data load.

I'll post a screenshot for you to see for yourself.

You're just showing off now!!

Thanks for that though - that's great, nice to "see" it in action.

I thought that the forum would be quite heavy going to load, so would be a good one to ask about.

I fear that spending is becoming increasingly imminent!

Re: Web browsing on iPhone

I'd second that, theres not really anything I've found that I use online that doesn't work on the iPhone, flash and java aside.
Its certainly a lot better than my Vario was!

Re: Web browsing on iPhone

On average to return to the forum home page from any section takes roughly 22 seconds to fully load the page including all adverts. Page scrolling and browsing while still loading is usually possible within 15 seconds using a 3G connection.

Re: Web browsing on iPhone

As a comparison I ran the same test using standard GPRS and it took 45 seconds to fully load the forum home page. The page again was able to be browsed within 25 seconds with loading continuing as you do so.

The various banners etc here really do slow things down considerably while mobile browsing. Another fairly large forum I use loads the homepage within 10 seconds using 3G.

I don't have a Edge connection here at my work but I'll test it from home this evening and post the results. The times are fairly respectable considering you get a full representation of the forum. If there was a mobile edition then it'd be rapid.

Re: Web browsing on iPhone

sneeks - How come your keyboard is at the top of your screen? Is that an option?

Yes it's very quick for browsing 3G. Sites like BBC news and Sport are particularly good.

AVforums is also manageable although some of the drop down boxes don't always work.

Re: Web browsing on iPhone

Glad I helped make your mind up. The new 2.1 firmware update is worth installing if you haven't done so already. Out of interest how did those times compare to your old phone? Enjoy the iPhone
