Can somebody clear this up for me?

I want to be able to use my MP3's as ringtones and my little sound effects as text message alerts on my 3G iPhone.

Do I have to jailbreak my phone as I don't really want to?
I keep reading about PwnageTool 2.0.2 which I'm guessing is jailbreaking but as far as my limited knowledge is concerned I need the forthcoming Installer 4.0 along with a SSH program to allow me to achieve my goal.

If I install Installer 4.0, does it mean my phone is jailbroke / jailbreaked??
Can I still receive any subsequent Apple firmware / software updates if I use only Installer 4.0?

As mentioned at the beginning, all I want is my own MP3's as ringtones, nothing else. If I can achieve this without jailbreaking my phone then that would be great.

Cheers,

Craig.

You can, as far as I know, use an mp3 as a ringtone. There are a few ways of doing it I think, but I only know one way.
For PC

Download iringer > import mp3 > choose the 30 secs you want(maximum ringtone length) > export (tick the export to itunes box) and bobs your uncle.

Not sure about text alert sounds.

Thanks for the tip. I've never heard of iRinger before. I'll give it a look.

Sorry, no Mac. Just XP Pro on a desktop and Vista Home Premium on a laptop.

What if I find a youtube clip on the you tube website, and I want to take the sound from that? Is there a way in which I can do it?
