Just got my iphone, what do I do first (setting up)

Hey all, just got my iphone. While I was in O2 the sales guy was telling me that some people have been having problems setting up there iphone because they where not connecting it to itunes straight away. Now, I was going to charge the thing first before I set it all up, as I've always given all my new electrical stuff a good 24 hour charge to open up the battery. So what do I do? I don't want to run into any problems really, so any help would be great. At the moment the sim is still out. Basicly what is the correct way to setup a new iphone?
Also I'm transfering my PAYG number onto my new contract phone, they said that this could take 3 working days and I would have a temp number till this happens, is there anyone to contact directly to do this alittle faster.

Thanks all, sorry for gibbering.

With regard to the charging, there is nothing in the packaging or on Apple's site saying you need to do this. It will be charging while you set it up via iTunes anyway.
