Can it only be done via the iphone?

I just tried updating an app (Dizzy Bee) via my phone. It takes about 15 minutes, then tells me it cannot be downloaded and will be available for download when I log into the Store, but the only option seems to be BUY APP, which of course I have already done. I cannot remove the icon from my phone, I cannot resync it over.

In iTunes click on Applications in the left hand bar then at the bottom right of the screen there is an option to check for updates.
