iPlayer on iPhone - Allowed on O2 Contract?

Just wondered whether the iPlayer was allowed on the O2 iPhone contract under the unlimited data they give you on all plans?

I would imagine so although I don't know if it would work with Edge or 3G as I've never tried it on those. Even if it did it may not be smooth. I've only used in on wi-fi in which case it's not an issue unless you're using one of the free wi-fi hot spots included in the contract. Even then it shouldn't matter as unlike other mobile phone company tariffs and other O2 non iPhone tariffs, unlimited data on the official iPhone O2 tariffs is truly unlimited. I've never had a problem with using the iPlayer or any other intensive download data use like radio.

yes iplayer is allowed, it does not work on edge, only on wifi, but i am unsure whether this will be the same with the 3g phone.

Thanks, I suppose we won't know for sure until the 3G iPhone is out.

May I ask why it might not be allowed?
If you can use iphone to go online for free, surely it would be allowed?

Re: iPlayer on iPhone - Allowed on O2 Contract?

They have whats called a fair usage policy. Remember unlimtied data isn't exactly that - I think its capped at something like 200MB or 2GB?

I notice that they get a bit annoyed when I use my Slingbox to stream SkyTV to my n95 and sometimes charge me, even though I'm on an unlimited data bolt on contract type thing.

I guess you really could argue your case though unless they started to actually list the types of applictions that were not included in the unlimited package, which to be honest I can see happening !

Unlike on other phones and tariffs there is no cap on the iPhone official contracts. It is truly unlimited. Initially before the iPhone was launched here O2 had set a limit and had a fair usage policy but due to complaints for so many people they withdrew that limit. Data packages on other O2 phones and tariffs still have limits and fair usage policies though.

Ah I didn't realise they had changed it - nice one !

I guess we will soon find out as I think 3G should be enough to get a decent iplayer experience. After all I've been using my n95 to stream SkyTV over 3G without any issue.

Works a treat on my n95. I mean its best when you are in a wi-fi zone, but when you have good 3G coverage its defo watchable. The only downside is when they plan to release an iPhone, although it looks like this could be sonner rather than later.

The combination of the slingbox streaming + iPhone screen could be a match made in heaven

that would be awesome especially if you could control the sky epg so you could watch programs saved on your sky+ box. I've got high hopes of this new app store, and hope there's going to be more cool apps in the pipeline

So does iPlayer work over a 3G connection? Anyone tried it yet?

I would check for you if I had my 3G iPhone but as in Apples infinite wisdom they decided to limit supply I'm going to have to wait a few days.

I've got my 3g up and running and can confirm that... you can only use iplayer over wifi. Youtube doesn't seem to work either on 3G.

Re: iPlayer on iPhone - Allowed on O2 Contract?

I used to use iPlayer with EDGE and even GPRS. You just need to be patient. If you start the program, pause it and leave it, it pre-loads in the background so when you click play you're good to go

I'd imagine that 3G would be fine as it'll download the content much quicker.

It's just a webpage after all that happens to play media content in a format the iPhone understands.

What?! I havent tried it yet, but I am totally surprised that Youtube doesnt work with 3G. Youtube works with EDGE. Oh well, that totally doesnt make any sense.

I always assumed YouTube would work considering its there on the frontpage of the iPhone interface?

Suppose we need a few more people to test iPlayer out with their 3G iPhones, well when they arrive anyway

Its not a case of it now working cause its slow. You actually get a message saying that the iplayer is only available for wi-fi connections !

OK, sorry, Youtube does seem to work (on 3G anyway) - it must have been down when I tried it last night. iPlayer definitely says that it won't work outside of wi-fi though.

Re: iPlayer on iPhone - Allowed on O2 Contract?

Is this via an iPlayer app? Or via the iPlayer website? If via the website, I'd like to know how the BBC can tell how you're connected to the internet.

I'm amazed that Apple have blocked it's use over 3G when it worked over EDGE. What do they have to gain by doing that?
