Question MPEG, AVI and the 3G iPhone

In advance of the 3G iPhone's release I'm going to convert the videos I want to store on it. Just in relation to the video file types in the title, which, if either of them will import into iTunes natively, ie. without need for conversion? Furthermore, which, if either will then import natively onto the iPhone? I don't want to waste time and disk space on my laptop converting vids that will import just fine as they are...

mpeg4 videos (m4v file extension) will import natively. Mov files will play in iTunes but will need conversion in iTunes to work on the iPhone. Other video file types will need conversion - AVS Video converter is pretty good.

HTH.

I use Videora. AVS better quality conversion?

Anyway so .avi file types (which the majority of my vids are) and .mpg file types (have a few of these) won't import into either iTunes or iPhone natively and will need full conversion. That right?

That's right, full conversion required.

I've never used Videora but I've never had any issues with AVS.

Re: MPEG, AVI and the 3G iPhone

Fair enough. I just noticed some of my videos tend to come out of Videora not as smooth as I'd like them, touch of grainyness, blocky background colours. Not all, some. And it's not that bad really. But it'd be nice to have crystal clear HD video quality, ya know?!

Sorry if this has been answered (not technical)... but if AVI is not accepted and they need converting, what file format do they need converting to and what software is best to do it?

MPEG-4 (m4v) to play on the Iphone / Touch, MOV will play in ITunes but not on the iPhone. iTunes IIRC will convert MOV files to Iphone format.
AVS Video Converter will convert AVI to either of these formats.
