Opera Mini on iPhone?

Thinking of getting the new iPhone when it's out. But as i am rarely in a 3G or WiFi zone i rely on Opera Mini. Whats the deal with getting Opera Mini onto the iPhone? I'm guessing it's not possible as it's java, unless i am missing something?

Re: Opera Mini on iPhone?

Now why would you want to do that!? Safari is absolutely fantastic and you don't need Wifi nor 3G to use it....It is the only phone with a real webbrowser built in that displays the page as intended, and you are looking to replace it!???? Why that is just plain daft...

How do you know it is not as quick!? You can't compare it like for like, and beside since when is Safari slow! As I said why would you want to do that when there is one thing you just can't have an argument about and that is that browsing on the iPhone is just fantastic...

duh? Of course you can have used both before. But bases upon that you can make statements that OMB is faster than the other. For that you need to run them on the same device with the same connectivity conditions otherwise it does not mean a thing.

I had opera on both m previous nokias n95 & e65, and compared to the others available it is the best by far. However I was never tempted to use it a lot sincer the interface is clunky the screen was also to small on those devices as you know yourself.

I am genuinely interested in what you are missing in the iPhone safari that you think opera will improve.

You do know that Opera Mini is not just a simple web browser don't you? It's optimised for devices with slow connections (i.e. mobile phones) in that all web traffic is routed via Opera's own dedicated servers.

With iPhone's Safari or Nokia's S60 web browser (also based on Safari) if you browse to a web page then you are viewing that page directly... all standard stuff.

With Opera Mini, your request for a webpage is routed to Opera's servers which takes the web page and then re-renders/recompresses the webpage to a fraction of its original size, including graphics, before sending the result onto your phone. The result is much faster web browsing on small devices.

And don't confuse Opera Mini with Opera Mobile, as Opera Mobile (like Safari or S60 browser) is just a normal browser and not a patch on Opera Mini.

You really dont have a clue what you are talking about do you

Opera Mini (not to be confused with Opera Mobile) absolutely spanks Safari over GPRS connections (which is what i will mostly be using as 3G and wifi coverage is poor). Opera mini's backend servers super compress pages before sending to your phone, you dont need to test both apps on the same phone to know that a 200k page will load much faster than 2,000k.

I have seen pages that take over 2 minutes to load on an iPhone take about 5 seconds on Opera mini. In fact some pages render almost as fast on my old Sony Ericsson using Opera mini as they do on my PC. You lose some image quality and flash is not supported etc, but at least its very fast, usable and i can happily browse all day. Can save you money too as it can reduce they data being transferred by 10 times.

Safari is a great browser, probably the best mobile browser, but without 3g or GPRS it's painfully slow - Opera Mini is just about the only usable browser. Before you start calling people daft etc, at least know what you are talking about, else you look a bit daft mate.

Now can anyone actually answer my original question?

Re: Opera Mini on iPhone?

to answer your original question which was rethorical. No it is not available. Hence you just can not say it is faster and calling the current iPhone painfully slow to browse is plain daft and demonstrates you actually have not used it. Also the perception of consists of many more factors than the size of the data, or just the speed of the download etc.

There are many other proxy type services out there which will add extra hops and some compression. Properly setup webservers will also do the compression on the fly to which those proxy services add no more benefit. Yes there can be benefits especially the reformatting part for mobile devices that done have those capabilities themselves and good for those.

Saying that the nokia browser is the same as being based on safari would be the same as saying that a ssyan yong musso is the same as a mercedes benz m class since it
buys its engines as the same factory.

Further more I was not calling any person daft merely the action taken or suggested. No need to make or take it personal.

I'm sorry, i see you are struggling with all of this, but i have used an iPhone many times and Opera mini is massively faster over GPRS, i'm taking often in the order of 10 times faster on crappy Sony Ericsson.

I was wondering if there were any hacks were available and my question was hardly rhetorical. Also wondering if anyone had heard if Opera planned an iPhone version. As for other similar services, i will look into seeing if OnSpeed will work ok, but thats a paid-for service.

Nothing taken personally

Believe the Steve Jobs hype if you want but please don't expect others to buy into your idea of nirvana.

Correct and i'll be amazed if anything except for Safari is ever given the green light by Apple.

If people cant start discussing things in an adult manner without talking down at each other i'll have no choice but to close this and issue infractions.

Looks like the question has been answered anyway, so surely that's the end of this squabble

Ive found Opera to be a lot quicker than the nokia browser on my N95 8GB and thats 3G so its a shame Opera might never appear on the iphone.

I'd hope it would be, as otherwise it would be extremely hypocritical of Apple after the amount they have complained about Microsoft forcing it's customers to use it's own software (media player and internet explorer) by bundling it with the OS.

Now Apple are bundling iTunes and Safari with the iPhone but wont allow any competitors to offer iPhone versions? Hmmm... smacks of hypocrisy to me.

Which is a shame really, if the iPhone had a more open architecture (and a more realistic asking price) I would certainly have considered buying one but as it stands I have no choice but to leave well alone.

Arguably different rules in law for a device like a phone than a personal computer...But to be fair Apple has not made any statements that it won't allow any particular company or software...It merely states that it need to be signed (or whatever the term is) and distributed through the app store to be official...

The point here is one about a java virtual machine that will be required which brings in another dependency...
