Will you be able to buy an iphone 3g in an apple store?

I'm living in India currently...I've just seen the keynote and that horrible bloke Steve Jobs has convinced me I won't be whole unless I buy an iphone 3g ....man that bloke has had some money off me..mini, photo, nano, shuffle, macbook pro etc etc

Unfortunately India isn't in Jobs's initial launch country list...even though it's the 2nd biggest phone market in the world

I'm coming over to the UK on 5th of July until 13th July...I obviously don't want an expensive phone contact with o2...Will I be able to buy an iphone in an Apple store..my fav being Bluewater?

Also, anyone know if I'll be able to download a Delhi map for the GPS so my driver can use it on the odd occasion he gets lost

A PAYG option is rumoured to be £269.

Not if you want to use it heavily for mobile web which for me is a key feature of the iPhone 3G. Its the oly way to get cost effective data use included with a contract.

Re: Can you not buy in an apple store?

I assume people who buy on PAYG plan to jailbreak it

Re: Can you not buy in an apple store?

Dont count on the fact that the new iPhone will be unlockable anytime soon for you to use in India - it wont be!

If I were you I would just wait for it to be released in India, its getting to the point with the App Store being released that unlocking / jailbreaking is going to become less and less popular.

Re: Can you not buy in an apple store?

Called in the Apple store at lunch hoping to see a sample of the new handset but nothing there yet, but I did ask about buying from Apple store and they said they would be selling standard O2 contract and PAYG versions, but even PAYG will likely need a UK O2 SIM (until someone cracks it).

Very bad deal this compared with 3's £5 internet deal :-

"A fair use policy applies and if your usage substantially exceeds that of other users, which is normally expected to be below 200MB/month, you will be charged standard rates for additional browsing"

3 use to be unlimited now I think it's a few GB's each month...

It's funny, in India you can't get a phone with a contract. You buy the two separately. You pay about £100-£200 for a top notch phone, £3 for the sim and about 1-2p a minute local and a little more for international....the apple store say on the Indian site "coming soon" so can't think that's going to happen in the next 6 months if they haven't set a date yet.

I'm coming back to the UK June 2009...I do fly back every 4-6 months so the PAYG would be handyish...I could always lock it again every month or so when I want to use app store I guess.

I would be reliant on being able to unlock it though. How long did it take to crack the original iphone? A few weeks? I can't see them locking it down even more as I can't see what they gain...would just put people off I'd thought...
