Frozen iPhone / Bricked?

HELP - After installing a couple of patchs for cracked Apps, my Iphone is just showing the Apple symbol on the black background. Without doing a complete restore - does anyone know how to fix a bricked iphone???

I looked at this but cant get it to work:-

Its not bricked but its likely you are going to have to do a restore.

Have you tried a hard reset? Hold down sleep and home until it reboots and WAIT because a hard reboot can take a while - anything upto 5/10 mins.

If that doesnt work looks like a DFU restore is required, hold down sleep and home until it reboots but let go of sleep and keep holding home until the restore screen comes up - then restore.

What happens during the hard reset? I've just tried it and the screen goes blank and then the Apple symbol appears. This occured about 10 times and nothing else after 10mins.
