iPhone 3G & Firmware 2.0 discussion

Well the rumour mill is working overtime again and it looks very likely that the 2nd Gen iPhone and Firmware 2.0 will be released on Monday 9th at Mr Jobs' Keynote speech.

All discussion about both these things is to go in this thread please until the obvious furore dies down a bit.

And as with all firmware releases DO NOT upgrade unless you are on an official iPhone contract, we will be keeping on top of things as much as possible and giving you the up to date latest news as it happens

I think that would be launched, not released. If we're very lucky it will be released within days. In order to avoid the FCC instantly publishing details, it is imperative to keep even its existence under wraps until the launch, so having container loads floating around multiple countries is too risky. And for the same reason it could be that there is nothing about it at all on 9th!

What we want that isn't in the already announced software update: 3G, GPS, video, iChat AV, Instant Messaging, cut & paste.

What is strongly suspected: .Mac is being completely revamped to support iPhone / iPod touch, and replace your PC as the "centre of your digital life", transparently syncing all your devices. No need for a PC at all, perhaps.

Here you go. Quanta (one of Apple's key subcontract makers) has rather a lot of boxes in California at the moment!

Does this mean we can't get it on-line? We (new customers) will have to go to a O2 shop to get it?

Re: All 2nd Gen iPhone & Firmware 2.0 discussion here

For existing iPhone owners with jailbroken phones, what will the 2.0 Firmware update mean? Haven't really being paying attention recently.

Do we not update due to issues with certain apps etc...???

did you even read the first post?

I believe that Apps and Installer do not work on the latest 2.0 Beta firmwares, expect the same with the final release.

I imagine if you sign up online (agree to contract, give bank details etc) then you will be able to order online as well as go to an actual shop.

Right I am confused by this. So assuming this was true... the customers on the most expensive monthly contract will not have to buy the phone. I am only on the £35 contract (lowest) what does this mean? Will I have some sort of charge for the iphone and a new 18 month contract?

TBH this is good news (if I understand correctly that is) as o2 really dont have to let us upgrade, but I suppose it is good for them as they get us for another 18 months...either that or I have picked up something completely wrong?

EDIT: Just re read it again and I understand now...brand new customers, DUH! I'm sorry, I will go and waken up now!

Thanks

I hope for new customers (like myself) we will be able to get the 3G iphone for £100 under the £35 contract (18 months). If not (i.e.: more expensive) i will have to go for the HTC Diamond.

Interesting read:

http://arstechnica.com/journals/appl...gns-for-monday

This will probably mean that it will be out in the US tomorrow... but we in the UK may have to wait a week or month. Who knows!?!?!?

I was planning on buying one to unlock to use on Orange - but if it can be gotten for £35 a month for £100 upfront then I'll probably take it on o2 for that - paying an extra £200 or so just to keep my number doesnt really make sense.

Can't you transfer numbers over on the iphone (if you get a PAC code)?

Yes, of course but I'm mid-contract and my Broadband is all mixed into my Orange contract and as I've had decent service from them I'm quite happy to stay.

My wife's contract is about to expire though so she's getting my current Orange contract and will "make do" with a SE K850i while I get the new iPhone, just means I get a new number and she gets the old one.

Is it possible to change mob. no's mid contract?

With a 7 hour time difference between here and San Fran, should be the early hours of the morning for us here in the UK, or is Sussex operating in a different time zone these days?

I thought that too, but then with daylight saving the site I looked up claimed it was 7 hours. Who knows?

Was also checking out the schedule on the apple site here but it's changed from this morning. Earlier it said iphone annoucement was at 1700, now it's iphone development. I'll shut up now and go back to hitting refresh on the announcements page. Nothing like being prepared...
