Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

Can see this being true, I have been saying for a while that the only way O2 can truly stop people wanting to unlock is to subsidise the cost of the iphone with official contracts.

I would assume thats going to mean an in-store signup though...

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

I would be stunned if they waited this long. They have not been available for x weeks and having this gap on the shelf must be losing Apple money. Many of the rumours (and I have been following them as I will be getting one of these as soon as they are released) suggest that USA will get it on Monday and UK and some other countries next Tuesday.

Apple tend to have a lot of stock ready to go on the launch date, so I doubt you'll be left waiting. And I can't see the initial take up matching that of the original iPhone so I doubt it will be too tricky to get hold of one.

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

If the price will really be £100, surely people who have bought iphones and O2contracts recently will be complaining since they have just forked out anything from £169 to £269 for a unit.

I think that is why there has been such a long gap in sales of a key product - practically unheard of before for Apple. 6 days and counting - then we will all know price, features, release dates etc. But you are right there will still be some mumblings especially if it is cheaper and has built in new hardware such as GPS etc.
Have also read rumours of upgrade deals for those with 2.5g phones - this might sweeten the pill.

thats like saying those who bought an 80gig ipod in 2007 for £260 should complain to apple for selling the ipod classic for £150.
I can understand the frustration as your tied into a contract, but then i was a bit p***ed off when i got my N95 for the N95 8gb came out the next week. thats life though

This is Apple and they've been known to release rumours in the past just to confuse the press and to contradict what they are actually doing.

There is an Apple conference on Monday (UK time 6pm) so I imagine by 7pm everyone will know what is going on, what the 3G iPhone will and won't have.

Personally I feel it will be pretty much released immediately in the USA and the UK, hence why stock is so low of the current iPhone.

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

Date rumours I've seen are 18 June and 8th august. I'd favour earlier after this availability gap. August might be a different product - iPod tablet type thing.

Wouldn't be suprised if 8th June is the 16gb version only to be gazumpted by a 32gb in august - a 32gb version is what I'm really looking for, but they won't release one of those unless there'sa 64gb iPod touch.

Might only be £100 if bought from o2 - get it from an Apple Store and it may well be the same price as the current model.

Release date? I reckon the US will get it tuesday right after the Jobsnote - the availability on the Apple store might be his traditional "...and One More Thing..."

On a side note - there's rumours of an announcment for OSX 10.6, being Intel only and given that MS are releasing details of a "touchy feely" next gen windows, Apple might announce something similar, iMac Touch's have been in thr rumourmill for a while already.

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

Popped into my local o2 store this morning and asked if they were ready for launch of iphone 2. They told me that they had been told launch date was in November. I find that difficult to believe but they were adamant.

What I want to know is....If the IPhone 3g (iPhone Black or whatever its going to be called) is going to be on sale in twenty odd countries in June why has there not been more leaked photos and details? They would have to be making 1000's of these things now just to be ready to go on sale.

As the 3G iPhone will be the second iPhone that O2 sell in the UK I don't think there will be the same rush or build up that there was to the first one. So O2 staff may only be given the details a few days before the launch.

I think there may be a bit of sabre rattling to encourage developers to think about moving off PPC and Carbon, but there's plenty of time yet. No chance of Intel only OS X before Jan 2010, IMO. Powerbooks were being sold less than 3 years ago, and Apple has never in 30 years completely cut off a machine in less than 5 years; it's usually 7. And that touchy feely Windows 7 will have "a release out there" in 2010. Vista's first release was 2 years before general release, and it wasn't even called Vista yet. So 2012 before you get that touchy feely rebranded Vista.

Probably only USA at first, with others following days to months later. That would be millions already built, not thousands. And apart from some factory workers shut in their on-site dormitories at night, only a handful of people will be aware of the full details of the device. Added to which Apple will deliberately plant false information to be leaked by people who think they know. Even Apple's internal developers of iPhone features won't know if the stuff they have done is in this release or not until the last moment. This is a truly incredible achievement, considering that as soon as Apple lets the information out that this thing even exists (it doesn't officially exist yet!), the FCC will take that as the start of marketing and release the grizzly details of the device certification. And within days of the launch, a million or so devices may be in the hands of users.

In the past, Apple has cancelled a product launch and scrapped the product because a supplier leaked the details, and completely stopped buying from the supplier too. A hundred million dollar punishment!

Macworld says possibly free on O2's top tariff, £100 on normal tariff; £269 PAYG. Matching upgrade deals if you refresh your contract.

With iphone sold out on O2's website i have a feeling that it may be coming out sooner than we think. June 9th has been touted as the date.

If they are trying to sell 10 million units by the end of the year i don't think they would want to wait till October / November to release it in the UK and the rest of the world (minus the USA).

Agreed.

I'd be surprised if it was released later than June in either America or the UK.

Lets hope we get good news on the 9th... for £100 its a steal and with my contract finishing tomorrow im hoping i might get this phone now. I was going to wait for another year before getting one but at £100 (for the 3G) its way too tempting.

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

Well there's rumours of current o2 iPhone users getting the new 3G iPhone free if they sign up for a further 18 months on top of their current contract.

It all seems rather mad and unbelievable, so I'm just waiting now to see what is announced. I'm really happy with my current 16gb iPhone but I'm a sucker when it comes to technology; especially Apple and technology

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

well I'll more than likely get the new iPhone for my tmobile contract just for the 3g data speed anything else it has will be a bonus and hopefully the easy to mark rear is replaced with something more durable
gps would be a bonus but how they would use it well I'm unsure

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

Latest rumours I've read is that the US & UK will get it first, most likely sometime before end of June, although the Italians are stating they'll be getting it on Tuesday.

I find it hard to beleive that some countries will be getting iPhone2 before others even have iPhone1...

Very sad, but I had a dream about getting an iPhone last night - the size & shape was very angular like a Zune, glossy black like a PS3 with no visible difference between the screen & bezel (imagine the monlith from 2001) - and the home button the front was the apple logo which was illuminated silver... god damn I wish I could render 3d models half decent

just to "touch" back on the subject of a touchy feely OS - there's some LCD monitor manufacturer's developing the required screens (saw a 22"er) and by all accounts they work pretty well - given that the interface used in the iPhone (and the iPod touch) have gone down so well, I think Apple will want to build on that and beat MS to the punch - granted, I think it's a stretch to expect it for 10.6 or even 10.7 as this would be such a evolutionary step in home computing that it would most likely be OS11

I hope you are right... i will be on the phone to O2 on Tuesday if thats the case... if its still £100 that is.

Re: 3G iPhone to be £100 with July launch

I went into o2 at lunchtime to ask if they'd heard anything and didnt get much of an answer, even though I wasnt really expecting one.

The lad I spoke to said there's definately something on the way soon due to the length of time they've been without the original iPhone - more than a month now?

I asked him about any discounts that might be available, he said that he'd heard rumours about a reduced price if you sign up to o2 in store but nothing concrete from higher up.

Last thing he said was "we might know a bit more on monday..."

Think i might give my lobal O2 shop a call on Monday morning.

Is it me or do they (O2) know exactly when its coming out but they've been told to keep their mouths shut until next week... or at least until Apple make the official announcment on Monday?
