Apologies in advance - more iphone advice needed

I have searched through the various threads and fora but would like some specific iphone advice.

My girlfriend would like an iphone for her birthday. She currently has 9 months to run in her Orange monthly contract. She would therefore need an unlocked phone to use her current SIM.

She would like to be able to use it to listen to music and store photos. Not bothered about watching movies. She would also like to browse the internet, Facebook, access emails etc. Not use it to download files etc.

I understand there is a new model coming out with (probably) 3G for data transfer. Is this necessary for what she wants to do or a nice feature but not really a must or is browsing without 3G a PIA.

Do we wait for the new model or buy one now? If we get one now where is the best place to get one from? New or newish s/h better?

I'm not very technical but can follow instructions so I'm pretty sure I could unlock one.

Recommendations please

TIA

Eisbar

There is a new one coming but no one knows when or the spec as yet but its pretty certain to be 3G. If you want one now then ebay is pretty much your only option and they wont be cheap. You could wait for the new one but it could be a while before someone works out how to unlock it. If you go for the older version it will already be unlocked (95% are) so alll you need is to put the new sim in. To be honest if you want faster browsing speeds when out of wifi range then the new one is the one to get, if not then get the old one. Might be worth checking your local o2 as there have been a few with iphones in stock.

Thanks for that

She doesn't necessarily want faster browsing, but just to know is browsing OK out of wifi range (on train to and from work mainly) or is it unusable as it's so slow and or flaky. Will 3G correct this if that is the case?
