Minor gripe with apple

The back on my 9 month old 4S is really loose and me being me ordered one of them pentalobe screwdrivers off eBay and completely ballsed it up (rounded the head on the screw). I know I shouldn't have but I though it would save me a trip to the apple store. Anyway cos of that I had no choice to take it in. When I got there he took a look at it and accused me of taking it to pieces, when I tried to explain what I'd done he didn't believe me at all. Now my £500 iPhone is falling to pieces and the warranty is non existent! Yes I should have just taken it in but I thought it would have been a simple fix. Previous experience with apple has been amazing up until now. Moan over...

Why are you having a gripe at Apple, when it was you that took a screwdriver to the device?

True but from the genius's perspective they get tons of stories of people feigning innocence when they have actually done some to void the warranty terms. Unfortunately for you, despite you only ruining the screw, it looks like the genius came to the conclusion of 'yeah right'; your best bet is going to see a different genius or failing that seeing an independent to remove the damage screw and get it replaced.

I've resigned myself to that fact. Just normally they are understanding, some guy stood next to me got a free replacement after he'd dropped his and cracked the screen which kinda wound me up a bit more.

That would be the best idea, get the screws replaced then take it back into the Apple store

Hope they haven't left notes onto your account regarding the rounded screws

Quick update, I emailed apple (tcook@apple.com) and I received an email back from my local store asking for my contact details and when could be best for them to contact me.

I emailed back with the appropriate info and I got a call from the manager who asked me what I had tried to do etc... I now have a reference number for me to go in and swap the phone.

Happy days!

I totally agree. I took the phone in, he had a quick look, apologised and have me a replacement!

I'm one very happy customer!

Funny thread this, how from self inflicted damage it being a minor grip at Apple to Apple still replacing the phone Best change the thread title...

However I now have a minor grip with apple
It is easy for a company with more than 100 billion in the coffers to replace stuff, but unfortunately they are not educating consumers that they should leave things to the experts and most small businesses just couldn't afford to do what Apple just did...

So whilst great on one level, I'm not convinced it is great in the long term...
