Seriously this is the most successful launch Apple have ever had selling an estimated 1.5m handsets already and everyone is jumping all over this and blowing it completely out of proportion because people just love to discredit the market leader dont they especially when they have just released such a huge upgrade... the demise of the iPhone

why would you get a refund? I assume you bought your bumper to protect your phone which it does.

Just called Apple Care. The guy on the phone said that the signal problem is well known by the Apple engineers and it is a software problem for definite. He said the engineers are working on a software fix and they hope to have this out by Thursday.

I also asked about the yellow 'hue' that some people are reporting (including myself) and if this persists after a few days, a replacement phone will be issued.

After initially reporting that I was not having the problem no matter how I grasped the phone (which was true in both locations I had tried it in up to that point) - i've recently discovered it happens to my phone as well.

It seems to be your location from the cell tower that triggers the effect. Was out last night and tried it in multiple locations. Sometimes I couldn't get the signal to go down no matter how I grasped the phone. In other locations it was very easy to replicate. All locations showed full bars initially.

mine also does it, but then I checked and my 3GS and 3G did it too?

Do i care, nope.

I've lived with iphones for 2 years and never noticed the problem in real use.

I was planning to buy a bumper anyway, so it should affect me even less.

It was tongue in cheek in that people are now getting free bumpers if you complain.

Yes indeed - I would see this as more of an issue for right-handed people.

Take a look at this Apple video and notice how most people are holding the phone and in which hand:

Apple (United Kingdom) - iPhone 4 - One-tap video calling with FaceTime on iPhone 4

Couldn't agree more! Apple seem to be going from strength to strength with each new product. I'm just gutted T-mobile haven't aren't doing the iP4 yet, can't get a signal with anyone else.

The rep at work has complained about his iP4 losing signal so it seems it is a widespread issue.
Great to hear Apple have taken the signal issue on the chin and are already working on a software fix! Great customer support as usual!.

unbelievable. lol.

great customer support?

as Mr jobs announces to hold the phone in a different way as your holding it wrong. Then they announce its a software fault?

Thats great customer support is it?
Fixing a fault which they caused is not great customer support. Thats doing their duty.

Its people like you that allow Mr Jobs to have the kind of arrogance he displays with his comments on the problem.

I just got back from my local Apple store, I complained about the signal dropping issue and they just fobbed me off by telling me to hold it a different way! I persisted and saw a manager who took my details. He says he will send me a bumper which may alleviate the problem but they have no stock atm.

Whilst in there I tried a few of the display models - all the ones I tried that were on o2 & Orange displayed the same problem I tried 2x that were on "3" and these didnt seem to have an issue, I could not replicate the signal loss.

I am with Tesco (o2) so am not sure now whether to cancel the contract and go with 3.

I use latex gloves. It eliminates finger prints and stops the signal bug.

I wouldn't try and draw any conclusion from those observations. There might just happen to be a 3 mast sitting right behind the Apple Store.

I went to the Apple store in Cabot Circus today and the one I tried on 3 had the same problems with signal.

This problem really has brought out the worst from the fanboys.

For crying out loud, stop defending apple and Steve Jobs. Forget childish rivalries with other phone manufacturers and owners. If the phone has a problem, phone up apple, take it back to the store, do whatever is necessary and let them know that you're not happy and want it fixed and ASAP!!! It is not acceptable to release a new product with faults that prevent it from performing its primary function. Sadly it is common to release new kit with flaws and bugs that can be later fixed by firmware but in this case, it should not have happened. Period. There was no need to rush it to market. It should have been thoroughly tested and released fault free. I can't believe a company like apple have been stupid enough to let it happen. They have an excellent reputation for building stylish, well made and user friendly devices that work and work well. This is why, these issues are simply unbelievable. I don't for one minute think that there are hoardes of people complaining for the sake of it to discredit apple. The fanboys need to take their apple tinted specs off and make sure that apple knows that it isn't good enough. Only then, will they know that the public aren't going to accept flaws on expensive goods just because of the logo they wear. I'm sure they have now learned that simple marketing and hype isn't as important than something that works.

To the person that thinks that apple getting their engineers on to the problem days after releasing the most anticipated phone in years is great customer service, are you for real? Great customer service would be not releasing the phone with a fault in the first place. Certainly not at the prices apple charge.

How long do we have to guarantee a replacement phone if they find a hardware fix?

Guys

How long from date of purchase from the Apple store do we have to get a replacement handset?

I have my box ready to send mine back but I'm going to wait for this "software fix" which is meant to come Monday.

If Apple do fix the problem and start producing new phones, will we all get a replacement?

1 year but according to consumer rights, if you have a valid issue the company (apple) can either first fix or replace the product within a certain time period (1-3 years)

If the fault lies with the hardware and the only way to fix is a hardware fix then yes we will get another phone as replacement. They could also offer a cash reinbursment if you don't hand the phone back and make do with it! That's only a guess tho

If it's a software issue can someone explain the logistics of a bumper improving/resolving the reception issues?

Can someone explain what a fanboy is? People who don't appear to own apple products, perhaps for financial reasons, keep using the term. Is it to make themselves feel better?

It happens on my handset that is driven by my 3 Sim - so don't change on that count. (but change if 3 give you a better deal anyway)

Yep, myself and my girlfriend also get the "no service" if we cover that black bit on the bottom right for too long... not good. I also find it hard to believe that not everyone is having this problem, how can it not be affecting everyone?
