day one 3G owners....next contract??

For all that got there 3G within the first few days/weeks, could I ask what you are going to do when your contract is up in January (18month contract). Are you staying with O2 or swapping to orange, going onto simplicity, etc. Not sure what to do. My iphone still works fine (even after taking a bath!), so is the 3GS that much better to require a new 18 month contract??

Cheers,
TR.

Re: day one 3G owners....next contract??

I'll be moving onto a Simplicity tariff and awaiting the next iPhone version.

I bought a 3GS on PAYG to use with my contract sim after selling my 3G. I would not start a new contract to simply get the 3GS, wait for the new model.

would those going onto simplicity switch to vodafones simonly? im thinking of trying vodafone as o2's reception in my area is shocking.

Re: day one 3G owners....next contract??

Probably simplicity, but if Orange offered a similar plan I might go to that.

14th January 2010 - I thought this day would never come

Re: day one 3G owners....next contract??

I'm not sure I'll sign up for another 18 month contract, I think I'd rather buy any new version on PAYG for use with Simplicity and sell the previous version to fund it. 18 months does not fit nicely with Apple's release schedule.

Re: day one 3G owners....next contract??

Longer term I agree with the above post - Simplicity until the summer, then see how the land lies with regards to new handsets.

Gotta say I like my iPhone a lot more at the end of 18 months than I have with phones in the past - normally by this stage they're extremely rubbish and rather scuffed/buttons falling off to boot!

Having had 3G and 3GS now I wonder if I'll still be Apple by the summer. Time will tell.

I'd wait and see what Apple comes up with next before jumping in any direction.

Re: day one 3G owners....next contract??

Android is tempting me but I'll only decide for sure when Apple announce the new iPhone. £20 per month Simplicity will be ideal until that time. Roll on Jan 12th 2010.

Re: day one 3G owners....next contract??

Now that I've got my iPhone officially unlocked I just ordered a few free PAYG SIMs from the other providers to see how their performance compares at home / work etc. In January I will probably switch to one of the various SIM only plans on offer until the next iPhone comes out. I'm tempted by the Virgin Liberty £18 tariff with 300 mins and unlimited texts/internet (1 GB FUP) as that would probably best suit my usage. Three's SIM £10 tariff (with £5 internet addon) for 100 mins and unlimited texts/internet (1 GB FUP) could also be suitable as most months I don't exceed 100 mins, or at least not by much - though it might be worth just paying the £3 extra for the extra 200 mins of the Virgin one though. Virgin also seemed to do much better than Three in this year's JD Power survey (Virgin was top and Three was bottom overall for pay monthly customers!).

I think I'll keep my contract rolling until any announcement in June. I'm hoping that my 30% discount will continue (I signed up with an O2 open code) while it's rolling.

I take it there wouldn't be much benefit to me changing to a simplicity tariff from Jan (would I be able to keep my number)? I'm currently on the £35 tariff and pay £24 p/m after the discount

You could certainly keep your number, and you may well have the discount carried over to the simplicity tariff if you switched to it - worth asking anyway! The £20 Simplicity tariff is the one that makes most sense for those currently on the £35 iPhone tariff and looking to switch:
Code:
         iPhone Simplicity
------------------------------
Cost £35 £20
Minutes 600 600
Texts 500 1200
Data Unlimited Unlimited
Wifi Unlimited £7.50
Assuming wifi isn't a big issue for you (it certainly isn't for me anyway - barely used any cloud or btopenzone hotspots in 2+ years of having iPhones) you get much more for less with Simplicity. Technically I think the FUP for data is more strict but for most people I doubt it would be an issue. If you can carry across your discount then it would be only £14, but even without it you would be saving some cash. That said I think O2 aren't currently offering the discount on new iPhone contracts so you may be better off staying on it in case you can't get it again when you come to switch back to an iPhone tariff (unless you just get the next one on PAYG and continue using simplicity - the difference in overall cost isn't actually that big).

Is there anyone who isn't jailbreaking by now? If your iPhone feels a bit tired you should definitely give it a go. It basically turns it into a mini mac laptop - you can do anything, and it'll look/work so much better.

If you lock in for a year on Simplicity, you get 800 mins (instead of 600) and 1600 texts (instead of 1200) per month.

And apparently £100 cashback which makes it rather cheap indeed - dunno if that's still available or if anyone's successfully had the cash for it.

Another good thing about Simplicity is that if you have insurance with o2 you can move it onto the simplicity contract

Still available: Quidco - O2 cashback

I'm going to move SWMBO from her current Orange sim only deal that gives her 200 mins & 200 texts (from memory!) for £10 per month, to the £20 per month Simplicity deal.

She will then get 800 mins/1600 texts/free web for £11.66 per month with the Quidco cashback.

I guess 12 month contracts aren't such a hot idea right now given what may be coming out halfway through 2010

I shall be going for the £20 simplicity deal in January, and then wait to see what Apple bring out later next year. My 3G is working fine and I can't justify the extra cost to upgrade to the 3GS on a new contract.

Not sure you can get this if you're already an o2 customer, unless you switch to PAYG (on orange or voda) then switch back in. Just something to bear in mind.

Alot of people a buying the new phones when they're out and then doing their own "synthetic" upgrade while the underlying contract remains the same.

So a 12 Month Sim-Only for the extra mins would be a good idea if you plan on selling your 3G/3GS to buy the next Apple release.

Thanks Tone, i needed that.

Whoever it was that said they were going to get the PAYG sim cards from Orange/Vodafone to compare the signals. Simple idea and i'll be doing the same. Those coverage maps don't give a real-life representation of iPhone use.

is there anything else not included though in the simplicity tariff compared to an iphone tariff? my contract is also up in jan ans was just gonna sit tight until the new iphone comes out later in the year

The differences, other the the included minutes, messages and contract term are:

Data - There is a much more relaxed fair usage policy on the iPhone contract. It's as close as you'll get to unlimited. Heavy data usage on Simplicity and other contracts will result in a warning and then a data block if you use too much. 750MB/month+ has seen this result as forum users will testify.

Visual Voicemail - Not supported on anything other than the iPhone contracts.

WiFi - Only you can say if you'll use this enough to warrant it. Personally, frequent stops in Hotels, service stations, airports, hotels, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants that offer WiFi access make it an excellent addition.

Support - The iPhone on O2 has it's own support team that, in my experience, are very knowledgeable.

Network unlock - iPhones bought on contract can be unlocked instantly.

In my household we have one iPhone 3GS on an iPhone contract (mine) and one bought PAYG that's being used on Simplicity with the data Bolt-On (hers). Mine suits me due to the amount of time I spend away from home (WiFi) and the number of calls and voicemails I get (visual voicemail). Hers suits her as those things aren't important to her, but keeping the cost down is (cheapskate).

Horses for courses. Get the facts right, get the decision right.

Does anyone know when we need to tell o2 we want to change to the simplicty contract? Think i'll just go on simplicity until the next iPhone announcement.

Probably give them the 30 Days notice prior to your contract running out
