Since it has a broken screen I suspect it may not be eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service - have a look here:

Apple - Support - iPhone - Service FAQ

You could always try

Re: Exchange Iphone for £140 from Apple stores?

I was given an original 2g iphone which wasn't working. It was way out of its' warranty period.
Took it to the genius bar at the Regent St, branch, they couldn't do anything with it and offered me an exchange for £140.00.
As it was a freeby I declined. So it's possible you could get one.

Yes you can

My daughter broke her screen last week; I exchanged it tonight at the Trafford Centre store for £139
