Im trying to get my email set up on my iPhone and what I’d ideally like is for messages in my inbox to be forwarded automatically to my phone i.e. so I get the number on new emails just to the top right of the mail icon. At the moment I have to click on the mail icon to find out if I have any new emails.

My main account is with Hotmail but I am aware hotmail doesn’t do push so have set up a Gmail account as described elsewhere on the forum. The messages all forward from the Hotmail account without a problem BUT I still have manually check for emails on my phone.

Push is set to on in the phone settings and the account is set to fetch

Any ideas or normal pitfalls I may have fallen into?

I just tried this, and it does work brilliantly!

But, is it pushing, or is it just consistently fetching every 5-10 seconds?

I only mention it cos if you open the mail app you get the "checking for mail" text along the bottom and the spinning wheel next to the data logo in the status bar. If you leave the mail app open, it repeats the checking process (text at the bottom and spinning wheel in the status bar) every 5-10 seconds. Also if you put a phone thats doing something near an amplifier/speakers you get that interference noise, which it seems to be doing more or less constantly.... It also depleted 10% of my battery within about half hour!

Right i have followed the instructions DracUK posted and the phone is synced with the Gmail account but it still doesnt seem to be pushing.

Cant think where im going wrong!

I've tried starting form scratch and setting up the account again. I find that the first sync goes fine and all new/unread messages are pushed to the phone. The problem starts when i try to test push as none of the messages after the initial sync are coming through!

This is driving me mad

I had the same problem as you initially...as soon as i set up gmail push on my 3gs i was sending myself lots of test messages to see if push mail worked properly...yet none of the messages arrived on time In the end the solution was to give the push system a few days to settle and now it works just fine. So as long as you've set up push correctly on your iphone, give it 3-4 days, its guaranteed to work by then

Also remember that every man, his cat and his dog on this planet have gmail push set up on their iphones so this is inevitably going to push gmail's servers to bursting point

That's probably the reason why. It worked flawlessly for me till a couple of weeks ago but now it's just plain broken I think. Even manual fetch doesn't get my latest emails but it seems to work once in a while.

Don't get any errors though - it looks like it completes the sync successfully (even over Wi-Fi) but none of the new mails are displayed. Not very dependable atm

it is good (and free), but it's slow getting to the iPhone. Don't know why. I know this because it's set up on my Win Mob and that always gets the message around 20 to 30 seconds before my iphone.
I would run push from my mail server, but i can't find how to get the certificate installed on the phone

Gmail Push is not working, messages are being delivered hours after they are sent. Yahoo Push is working - Google Mobile Help

3.1.2 is what broke it apparently. They applied a fix which fixed it for some but broke it for a few others. And as usual, Google is pulling the "Sync is not on the Apps SLA agreement" and "please keep in mind that this is a Beta product that was just recently released" and so on and so forth.

Sometimes I wonder why I purchased this shiny thing

BTW - does anyone know for deffo if you turn on calendar in the mailbox settings, will it definitely delete all the calendar entries in my iPhone calendar app? Cos I'd like to turn it on and have whats in my iPhone calendar app synced to my google calendar, but Idon't want it to delete what I've already (manually) entered, as I have a whole lot of future events in there I don't want to have to re-do

Can't u just change fetch to manual, if u stop getting notifications you'll have your answer

I purchased the PushGmail app a couple of months ago as I wanted push email before it was supported.

The app works perfect, so if you're having a mare getting push to work properly it's probably worth just buying the app for £1.19.

Just did that, then sent a test mail from gmail (computer) to myself. Arrived on phone about 30secs after sending!

Noticed tho, that when I have the mail app (iphone) open since changing the fetch option to manually, it does the "spinning wheel + checking for mail" bit only once and not every few seconds like it did earlier when I had fetch set to every 30mins

Well mines not pushing anymore... It has been during the day, but since I got home, I turned on Calendar sync (which wasn't worth it BTW) and since then it's not pushed mail to my phone...

I deleted the mail box, re-added it, and still won't push. I have to open the mail app to manually download the mail

Ok, interestingly, it's working again now.

Before I tried the Google Sync with Calendar option, I did a back up in iTunes of my iPhone (just incase my calendar entries got deleted), and I've just done a restore of that back up, and sent myself an email from the computer and it's pushed to the phone within 30secs again!

Strange that, as before the restore, I deleted the mailbox and then added it again exactly the same way I did last night, so it should have worked fine! So I don't know why doing a restore made any difference, but it seems to, so now I'm not messing with it again! Specially since the GoogleSync Calendar option doesn't actually sync calendars, just allows you to view your Google Cal on your iPhone (which isn't what I wanted!)

well i couldnt even get to my mail today just showed an empty inbox. still not working now, will leave it for the night and if its still not working tomorrow i'll delete the mail box and re-install

Finally my phone is pushing messages!! Seems like giving it some time to sort itself out has worked.
