New iphone 3gs user..... Help please.

Hi all,

I've just picked up my brand new o2 iPhone 3GS today. The girl in the store put the sim card in the phone and said i was ready to go and i just needed to connect it up to iTunes when i got home.

I've unpacked everything and connected it to my PC at which point iTunes fires up and sees the phone ok but then before going any further comes up with an error message stating.......

"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported"

"Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card"

I've tried taking the SIM out then back in again but still the same. I've noticed the SIM card that they have given me has iPhone 3G written all over the envelope and card and not 3GS. Does this matter??? I've called the store up and they said i need to turn the phone off and just keep trying to turn it on every 30 mins till i get a signal in the top left of the screen as at the moment it just has dashes untill i connect it to iTunes when it then says no signal.

Is this all normal????? I was led to believe when i bought it it should just work straight away etc...

By the way this is a brand new phone with a new o2 SIM as my number is supposed to be ported over from vodafone in the next few days.

Thanks for any help.

Dave.

from everything you are saying it should work.

I would try a restore in itunes to see if it will reactivate,

go into itunes and click the iphone and you should be able to "restore" this downloads the most recent software and restarts the phone from factory settings (hopefully as it hasnt worked yet you havent got any contacts or anything on it yet.)

As soon as iTunes detects the phone though it comes up with the same message everytime i connect it. I don't get a chance to do anything else. other than remove the phone. There is nothing to restore back to as nothng about activating etc.... has come up on screen like it says it should on all the run throughs / instructions i can find around.

I wondered if the SIM was bad but it does recognise when the SIM isn't there it just doesn't seem to want to activate at all.

Cheers

Just thinking about this.......

Before i connect the phone to iTunes on the PC should i have a signal showing in the top left of the screen or should it only come up with something after i've activated it on iTunes??? As i said above at the moment it just has 4 dashes showing till i connect it up then it says no signal instead.

Cheers

if the phone is unactivated it will have just a picture of the dock cable on the screen and you wont be able to do anything else with it.

if its just you have no signal it may be that there has been a problem transfering your number

did it work fine on the temporary number when it was activated by the o2 shop?

It's still supposed to be on the temp number. I only bought it today and they took my PAC code and said my existing number would be ported over within 72hrs. The shop haven't activated the phone that's what i'm trying to do now myself with iTunes...... I think. All she did in the shop was open the box and put the SIM in the phone then put it back in the box and then put it in the bag and out i went.

Am i to assume the person in the shop should have done something before i left the o2 shop???

Re: New iphone 3gs user..... Help please.

Well i took the SIM out again to see if anything happened when put in my existing N95 8gb and nothing did. I put it back in the iPhone and tried turning it on again still got the same screen as usual with the little USB connecter etc.... Connected it to the PC and this time it looks like it has fired up. I'd already tried removing the SIM before so all i can think is it's either a dodgy contact or there was maybe some delay on activating the temp number/SIM???

Thanks for all the assistance given above though.... Thanks has been given on the posts.

Cheers

Dave.
