Upgrading to iPhone

I have an HTC Touch Diamond with Orange and I am now entitled to an upgrade, so have decided to go for the iPhone.

1. Do I get to keep the same phone number?

2. Do I just transfer the SIM from my HTC to the iPhone?

3. Will I still be able to use my HTC? (its got loads of pics etc on it.)

4. Also, if I use Wifi on my own home internet connection, will that count towards the 750MB allowance?

Thanks,

Jon

Re: Upgrading to iPhone

Thanks for that! To continue being able to access my HTC phone, I presume I will need to get a SIM for it so it will boot up? Do I just get a PAYG SIM?

Also, if I go into an Orange shop, do I get an iPhone immediately or do I have to wait for a delivery?

With most modern phones you can do most things without needing a sim (apart from making and recieving calls and texts!), but getting a cheap payg sim is another option.

Can't answer your question about Orange stock levels of the iPhone though.

Would have thought that calling them would be your best bet.

Re: Upgrading to iPhone

I just get an answerphone.

What do you reckon I should take in there to upgrade? Drivers license? Utility bill? Orange statement?

Almost certainly not. Orange invariably provide a new SIM card with an upgrade (if they don't with the iPhone, it will be the first time I am aware of this happening and I worked for them for 7 years!). They usually expect to register the new SIM against the phone when it gets delivered. Normally this is because some customers have old SIM/phone combinations, which aren't always compatible with new phones (the voltage the SIM requires might be different - newer SIM card types run on lower voltages, improving battery life).

Re: Upgrading to iPhone

So what are the implications of them giving me a new SIM? Does that mean new phone number and loss of previous contacts and messages?

You'll keep your phone number and as for contacts/messages, it depends on where your old phone stored them. If it's on the phone (likely), then that's where they will still be (ditto SMS).

Getting your contacts across should be as easy as synching the old phone with the windows or outlook address books, as iTunes will happily read the contacts from there (although I keep mine synched with my gmail contact list).

SMS I don't think will go across, as every phone vendor stores theirs in a different manner and I've (sadly) yet to see a way of importing them.

Just done exactly this. Upgraded from a Touch Diamond to Iphone on Orange.

It arrived today and I called up with the new simcard number, old sim in my touch diamond has stopped working and waiting for something to happen with my Iphone.

Anyone know how long it takes for anything to happen? So far I have turned it on after 2 hours of calling up and waiting for text messages apparently, but nothing.

Its been nearly 5 hours, I wanna play with Iphone.

Have you plugged it into iTunes to activate it?

Possibly. From memory it will only allow emergency calls on O2 until it's activated. I've not tried sending a text to my phone when it's in that state.

Re: Upgrading to iPhone

Hi - so which iPhone are most dudes choosing for their upgrade 3G 8GB or 3GS 16GB (+£87 if choosing 600mins & 500 texts over 24months) - is it worth paying that bit more to keep it to 18months? Also is it worth the extra dough for the 3Gs I have a 250gb ipod classic already which I will stick with as my main music source... all thoughts welcome

kind thanks

I wouldnt get a 18 0r 24 month contract on the 3gs or the 3g at the moment, if apple stick to previous trends there will be a new model in 7 months.
