Internet

Hi,

A quick basic question.

How do I tell if i'm connected to the internet, i'm worried about landing a massive bill.

I understand the wi-fi side of things but i'f i'm out and collect my e-mails I presume i'm connecting to the internet.

I need to make sure i'm not connected all the time.

Thanks..

Re: Internet

Beside your network in the top left you should see a little icon that is a circular loading indicator. This appears when you are loading data.
This doesn't allow you to stop Internet access though

Re: Internet

Its on a business contract so not sure. I will call them tomorrow to check but was worried about ringing up a big bill. Is there an icon on the screen that appears when you are connected to the web ? if so I can't see it.

Thanks

If you are on contract it should include unlimited internet access, I assume you are with O2?

Re: Internet

It's not about being connected, it's about downloading data. You're only charged for the data you have downloaded and not the amount of time you are connected. You could be connected 24 hours a day but if you only download 2MB of data then that is what you pay for. I'd just give them a call and check your data allowance on your current tarrif.

Re: Internet

Just to follow this up instead of starting a new thread. I've connected to my home WiFi fine - however when I access the internet and download things, I don't know whether or not the phone is using the free WiFi connection or the internet (which, yes, is technically 'free' but as I stream quite a bit of stuff I don't want to push my 750MB 'fair usage' policy too early in the contract!).

I'd just like peace of mind that I'm definately connecting via WiFi.

Cheers

Re: Internet

If it shows the WiFi signal, it's using WiFi... but you can be double-sure by checking your mobile data usage by going to Settings > Usage and scrolling down to 'Cellular Network Data' and checking to see how much you've used. WiFi data is not included in this so if the figure increases, you're using mobile data.

You can reset the statistics at the bottom of that same page if you wish.

So, just to clarify, if there's the three semi-circle icon showing to the right of the network, then it's using WiFi, and if that is replaced by the '3G' icon then it's using mobile data? I know it sounds very obvious, but I'm not used to things being so simple! Cheers.

Re: Internet

Cheers. I am constantly surprised at how simple and straightforward the iPhone is, and constantly suspect that it's much more complicated and I'm just being thick. Thanks for all the help.
