3G to 3GS upgrade cost if contract has expired?

Hi,

Was wondering what the cost is to upgrade my iPhone 3G to 3GS is at the end of my current contract will be?

No doubt O2 will try and rip people off for this.
If so, is there any reason why i wont be able to transfer to a sim only web bolt on deal for £15 a month?

Thanks

Once your contract is at an end I don't think there's any difference whether you are a new or existing customer for the 3GS handset. The longer the contract and more you are willing to pay each month the less you will pay for the handset..

Is it worth upgrading to 3gs if you've already got a 3g iPhone?

Yes if you want compass features, better satnav, more memory in the 32Gb version, faster processing and more ram for running more/bigger apps

Otherwise no.

If you are wondering if you will be offered any special deals then unfortunately the answer is no - it will cost the same as someone starting a contract for the first time. One thing you could do though is sell your 3G to offset the cost of the 3GS. iPhones hold their value quite well so you should get a good fair amount for it - have a look in the classifieds section of this site to get an idea of the going rate. Bear in mind that a new iPhone is likely to appear around the middle of next year so you may just prefer to stick with your 3G until then.

No reason at all - once you are out of contract you can do what you like! Plenty of people use the iPhone with the simplicity tariff. In fact it is worth getting O2 to officially unlock it now while you are still on a pay monthly tariff with them as they will do it for free. That way you can either switch to O2's simplicity (and you should be able to do that one month before your current contract actually ends), or move to another provider's SIM only deal and take your number with you as it may be cheaper and/or offer better coverage - and as your iPhone will be officially unlocked you won't need to worry about jailbreaking it to use it on another network.

If you do move to simplicity then the £20 tariff is quite a good one as you get 600 mins, 1200 texts and inclusive web (assuming you choose that as the inclusive bundle). The £15 one doesn't include a bolt on for free and has less mins/texts too - and to add the web bolt on will cost £7.50 (and having the iPhone without a data plan is a "Bad Idea"), so in order to get a cheaper simplicity tariff with data requires taking the £10 tariff with the web bolt on which ends up being only £2.50 cheaper than the £20 tariff and gives you just 150 mins and 300 texts.

Other good (data inclusive) SIM only deals to consider might be:

Virgin's Liberty £18 which gives 300 mins, unlimited texts & web
Three's SIM £10 which gives 100 mins, unlimited texts & 1GB web
T-Mobile Solo £20 which gives 600 mins, unlimited texts & web

If you are a relatively low user of mins and texts then giffgaff may also be worth considering as they are a new PAYG virtual network offering 8p calls, 4p texts, and free data for "at least" 6 months (after which they haven't decided exactly how or what they will be charging for data, but by then the new iPhone will probably be available and you may be wanting to move anyway so if the data charges aren't very good you can simply port out again). They work by giving credit for advice on their forums and recommendations, so if you do want to give them a go feel free to use my username (same as here) when signing up for the SIM!
