iPhone 3G No Wi-Fi (greyed out)

Seem this is quite a common problem when you google this issue, but no one else on here seems to have the problem or solution.

http://elliottback.com/wp/iphone-no-wifi-problem/

ive found quite a few "solutions" like this Wifi Fixer [iPhone Dev Team]
but they seem quite involved for the basic user, so will apple be able to fix this problem if out of warranty?

Re: iPhone 3G No Wi-Fi (greyed out)

I had this exact problem on my iPhone 16gig 3G, which appeared after an upgrade to 3.1 software.

Took it to Apple Genius bar in Glasgow, where he confirmed (without saying it in so many words) that it's a known issue. He swapped it out straight away. Got home, did a restore and everything working as normal

If it's still under warranty, get it replaced - I did.

Assuming you've already upgraded software to the latest version - 3.1.2?

Re: iPhone 3G No Wi-Fi (greyed out)

they should swap it anyway, even if you are out of warranty.

they would be scumbags if they didnt, id use the old sales of goods act on their asses. (worked for my ipod a while ago).

I had same problem a few months ago took me 3 months to find the time to take it into O2 shop after an email waste of time. Apple store genius @ Exeter were spot on I didn't have a booking but they fitted me in after my bad morning, no messing swopped the phone, hats off to some profesional service for once.

My advice just go in with a good attitude

well i went to genius bar and they basically said as its out of warranty im out of luck. They said a wire may have come loose from the wifi chip, so they took it apart (in some room) to have a look! I can pay them £130 for a new iphone 3g. might just wait to see what deals come out around xmas for the 3gs

Re: iPhone 3G No Wi-Fi (greyed out)

That's poor, there's a huge thread on this over at Apple so it's clearly a known issue.
Mine worked for a while after upgrade but died over the weekend. The iphone doesnt even recognise it has a wifi chip any more.
Luckily this one's a warranty replacement (my third one ) so I got a 3 month warranty for it, as my original warranty ran out last week. The most annoying thing is I keep having to buy new Invisible Shield's every time I get a new one.
I also noticed on mine since the wifi stopped that the battery now drains in around a day (with no use) so it's definately got issues.

Running the iphone configuration utility the log file reader says
Quote:
"Mon Nov 9 18:37:38 unknown Preferences[102] <Warning>: -[WiFiManager init]: Couldn't find a WiFi device"

Re: iPhone 3G No Wi-Fi (greyed out)

I'd quote the fact that the wifi issue is a known fault with the new firmware and whilst you're happy to pay the £130, you'll only take a 3GS.

Good luck with it, I havent found my local "Geniii" particularly helpful when it's anything outside of a swap/replace.

Mine was confirmed by the apple store as a known fault with firmware upgrade and was replaced for a new one. (1 day to spare on the warranty !)

You will not get a 3GS for a 3G. Pay £130 if you want a replacement 3G

Is it not worth moaning at the operator...... surely they're contractually obliged to ensure you have a fully working handset whilst the contract is still running with them

My 1G iPod touch did this, I tried everything to fix it and even took it to a few service places but they all said the same thing 'cant repair it'.
