iphone with BT car stereo and GPS?

I carry alot of crap with me so i am trying to combine them all.

I have o2 xda ii with win mobile 6 with tomtom5
bluetooth with gps receiver.
a razr v3 mobile
bluetooth car stereo for calls when driving
a tomtom 520 traffic

thats a crap load of gadgets i carry even before my lunch box for my daily commute in my car. LOL. I cannot afford iphone 3gs but neither do I need 3g. ...So, I can get enough cash for second hand iphone 2g pay as you go.

I understand iphone 2g had alot of teething/restricted issues. You couldnt send files over bluetooth/mms issues/mp3 as ringtones.

1. Does jail breaking unlock phone to all networks as well unlock all them restricted features. ie. allows me to use mp3 as ringtones? Or is this an seperate issue? edit - So I understand an iphone must be jail broken then unlocked via Cydia but Cydia allows you to unlock at the same time of jail breaking (thus confused me) providing its firmware is 3.0.x . what happens if your iphone is 3.x.x higher? You'd use a different method?

2. Will it work with my existing bluetooth GPS receiver

3a. I presume I will have to re buy tomtom as my tomtom5 win mobile version is different operating system to iphones one?

3b. I understand tomtom onnly came out for the iphone 3gs but will i be able to install it on to iphone 2g then use bluetooth gps receiver?

4. How big is the tomtom installtion? for EU maps ? obviously I understand Iphone 2g came in 8gb, 16gb sizes? so i presume 8gb is suffcient. I have an mp3 usb car stereo for songs.

5. will i have incompatible issues with my car stereo kenwood kdc bt6544? for example when iphone is linked to my car stereo via blue tooth for calls. But i then want to use the iphones bluetooth also for the GPS receiver for tomtom?

sorry for all the questions

1. You can use converted MP3's as a ringtone now. You can convert it in iTunes. There is a 30 second limit though.

2. No, you can't use a Bluetooth GPS receiver with the 2G.

3a. Yes but won't work on a 2G as it has no proper GPS.

3b. No, 2 & 3a apply

4. UK is around 250mb, EU around 1.4gb.

5. Car bluetooth should be fine.

The usual Apple standard of only being able to use Apple products.

Why not get a 3G instead ? This has the GPS receiver built in.

Re: iphone with BT car stereo and GPS?

3gs I am looking about a good £400. I just saw some people on forums use a wired holux brand GPs to the bottom connector of iphone 2g.

The 3G is a lower than that.

The 2G iPhone is permanently unlockable, it happens at the point where you jailbreak it. You don't need to install anything from Cydia. And you can use mp3's as ringtones, you just have to convert them first. MMS can be enabled via a hack from Cydia.

2. Will it work with my existing bluetooth GPS receiver

Actually, it probably will - see here. YMMV, though.

3a. I presume I will have to re buy tomtom as my tomtom5 win mobile version is different operating system to iphones one?

Yes, you would have to buy it from the app store - and see the next question...

3b. I understand tomtom onnly came out for the iphone 3gs but will i be able to install it on to iphone 2g then use bluetooth gps receiver?

I think that TomTom will refuse to install on an unsupported device. So you'd have to find a way of getting it onto the 2G iPhone. It must be possible (see the above site where people have it working), but I don't know how it's done or how complicated it is.

4. How big is the tomtom installtion? for EU maps ? obviously I understand Iphone 2g came in 8gb, 16gb sizes? so i presume 8gb is suffcient. I have an mp3 usb car stereo for songs.

The UK version is < 300MB. The Europe version is, I believe, around 1.3GB. So you'd still have plenty of room left for apps and music on a 2G.

5. will i have incompatible issues with my car stereo kenwood kdc bt6544? for example when iphone is linked to my car stereo via blue tooth for calls. But i then want to use the iphones bluetooth also for the GPS receiver for tomtom?

I have no idea whether the iPhone can pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously, but I suspect not. Especially when linking to the GPS requires hackery.

sorry for all the questions

In all honesty, I suspect by far the best option is to spend a little extra and get a second hand 3G rather than a 2G. That site I linked too seems an excellent solution for people who already own a 2G (or an iPod Touch), but it seems too much trouble to buy an iPhone 2G with the intention of using it for GPS. Just get one with it built in already.
