How do I restore iTunes?

I have my iPod synced to my PC but want to sync my iPhone.

When I plug my iPhone in it just accepts it and syncs it which does nothing much really.

Anyone?

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

haha sorry dont know how else to explain it. Ill break it down as I really need to know what to do here.

1 Apple has me over a barrel and i MUST use iTunes to back up my iPhone.
2 Had my iPhone synced to my new mac that I hated and am returning.
3 Now need to sync my iPhone to my PC so I can back it up as apple still has my over a barrel and there is no other way to do this.
4 My PC is set up to sync to my iPod though.
5 When I plug my iPhone into iTunes nothing happens
6 Uninstalled and deleted everything I could find related to iTunes then reinstalled but like all good 'over a barrel' type applications Apple refuses to bugger off, so it knows I have previously had iTunes installed which puts me back to step 5.

@ panjabi

Not wanting to restore iPhone mate, want to restore iTunes. Thanks for trying to help though

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

If I'm reading this correctly then your problem is that your iPhone is still set up to synchronise with your MacBook but it can only sync with one computer at a time.

What you'll need to do is set your iPhone up to sync with your windows PC instead. It will probably try to erase the music from the iPhone, but if you have that music on your PC anyway then it won't matter as it will simply resync it up afterwards (this is to prevent you from copying music that you shouldn't from one computer to another via your iPhone). I believe everything else like contacts and messages etc. should be retained during the resync process though. Just be sure that you use the same itunes login on your PC as you do on your iPhone.

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

Install iTunes on your PC, connect iPhone, click Sync.

Then accept the prompts telling you about erasing data.

Just make sure you have your personal data (contacts, calendar etc) backed up as it will wipe everything.

If it still doesn't recognise it, search this forum and/or Google for iPhone DFU mode

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

Hey Rob. Sorry i mustn't be coming across clearly here at all.

I already have iTunes on my PC but it is synced to my iPod. I want to sync this to my iPhone, (dont care about my iPod)

I have plugged my iPhone into my PC iTunes many times and nothing happens at all it just accepts my iPhone. I have synced my iPhone to iTunes (pc) and when i next look at my iPhone nothing has changed even though everything is totally diffrent on iTunes to my iPhone.

So, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and it wont bugger off, even if I delete all iTunes folders etc. (god I hate iTunes!!!)

So what do I do?

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

iTunes will happily to sync to more than one device, however the iPhone (and any iPod for that matter) will only sync to one computer.

All you should have to do is what Rob said; with iTunes on your computer connect up the iPhone and then click sync. iTunes should at that point say something along the lines of the iPhone being synced to another computer and ask you if you want to erase and sync it to its library instead. Just click yes and it should sort itself out. I'm pretty sure contacts etc. should be retained, but it's worth making sure you have them backed up somewhere first (I've set mine to sync with google as it then keeps my contacts and calend synced over the air).

If iTunes isn't detecting your iPhone at all then try using a different USB port on your PC - and use a port on the PC itself rather than one on the monitor or keyboard.

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

Hi Simon,

On plugging my iPhone in to a diffrent USB port on my tower, I now get a message that reads.

"This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again."

So I do just that, and now were on loop. After uninstall/reinstall I just get the same message.

Anyone??

Glad you got to the bottom of it in the end - iTunes isn't normally quite such a pain - honest!

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

Thanks Simon,

First thing I noticed though re PC back up is half the stuff doesnt back up (unless im mistaken)

IE Photos and Vids have to be manually backed up.

Notes and Calender dont back up either.

I have synced my contacts to back up to Google contacts.

On the Mac I would just press sync and all of the above was done. You could create a note on the mac and swap it back and forth, same for calendar etc.

Mind I didnt like much else about the Mac. Tried it for a month then selling it on.

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

I believe pics and vids taken on the iPhone are backed up and restored if need be, though they aren't actually synced via iTunes for some reason - you need to manually copy them if wanting to access them on your PC. However you can set image folders that are already on your PC to sync with the iPhone and it will happily do that.

The calendar and notes should sync happily enough with Outlook on your PC though - they do on mine anyway. Well the calendar doesn't anymore but that's because I changed it so the PC uses the google sync tool to keep itself synced to google.

Re: How do I restore iTunes?

Yeah I discovered google sync last night.

Its a shame no one on the PC has come up with a 'one program backs up all' what iTunes doesnt. So notes, calendar, photos n vids etc.

This would only have to have basic features as if you wanted to edit them you could use another app like photoshop or whatever then back to the back up program to sync over on next doc.
