Hilarious....

Just got a Win 6.1 based HTC, just because I can't stand the sodding iPhone....

Plus I can use MemoryMap on it... which you can't on the 'other' one....

Well good luck with that - I have had Win Mobiles since orange released that awful looking smartphone in 2001? I today have 3 HTC devices and the iphone for me is still the best of the bunch - if you want a bad device get a HTC Touch Pro - it makes calls denies calls and generally needs a reset at least 3 times a day - se we all at work call it the HTC reset!

The browsers on the HTC phones (including Opera) are terrible so i still reckon the iPhone is still the most complete device.
OK there are downsides but I don't use memorymap and you do so hope its all good but there is my 2 cents worth

Which device did you get?

Got the HTC Touch 3G on a £25/month contract (down from the £35/month I was paying) plus I'm getting the Orange maps (a bit iffy, but useable) and 500Mb/month.

So far, just less than 2 weeks in, the phone's been great, about to install MemoryMap, and get everything up and running to use when greenlaning with the rest of the Land Rover mob....

Considered the Toshiba Half-housebrick, but went for the smaller, pocket friendly HTC instead....

Will let you know how it goes.....

i wont turn this in to a flaming session because it is each to their own but i agree with windfall here, I've had a HTC Touch Cruise, Touch Diamond and Touch Pro 2. Each phone in their own right has had me pulling my hair out at one stage or another, whether its their slow unresponsiveness, lack of a decent browser, or the ability to end calls when the phone is pressed against my ear, I could go on but then its just my opinion of course!

The (jailbroken) iPhone is by FAR the best phone currently available from my experience!

Lets not turn this into a thread about which mobile platform is best otherwise im going to have to close it, we split the mobiles forum some time ago to avoid this.

Re: The iPhone Ad You'll Never See

I was merely pointing out, perhaps in a crass way (apologies to iPhone users, iPhones are obviously perfect), that phones will drop calls, I've never had one, on any of the networks I've been on (1 year on Voda, then 3 on T-Mobile, 4 1/2 years on 3, and now into the 3rd year on Orange), that hasn't dropped a call at some point, usually due to the inbuilt vagaries of mobile telecommunications.

The Moto A920 was dreadful for it, and used to drop one in every three calls, the LG after that was much better, the Sony W850i better still, so much so that my son still uses it now I've had it unlocked for him, moved from 3 to Orange, who's 3G coverage is advertised as the best, but doesn't seem as good as 3's, but 3 didn't do the 'Magic Number' at the time I swapped networks, even now, I believe 3's PAYG service still has a time limited top-up.

Went onto the LG990 when joining Orange, but was using an HP PDA with a Navman GPS sleeve for MemoryMap and thought it would be handy to be able to use everything in the same unit when upgrade time came, they'd stopped doing the Touch HD when I upgraded and wasn't willing to pay £40/month for the Diamond2, and the Toshiba TGO1 is huge, driving trucks for a living I needed something a little more portable...

If the iPhone used MemoryMap, I might have waited, but to be honest, and this is not meant as a dig at those that have them, iPhones seem to be the latest 'must have'. While I don't mind paying for quality, I won't pay through the nose to be a sheep, plus I can go through a battery or two in a shift listening to music, and I'm not 100% sure the iPhone has interchangeable batteries... I know the iPod doesn't.

Only problem I've found so far with the Touch 3G is it's irritating habit of breaking the music when I'm listening on bluetooth headphones... I can live with it, but sometimes when you're in a warehouse full of loud blokes and cr@p music it's nice to be able to listen to your own and drown them out....

I'm not saying the HTC is perfect, I haven't had it long enough to know yet, and maybe, in a few weeks I'll be in here bald, but each to their own...

The "day with an 'R' in it" was meant as a joke, not a direct attack on iPhones, apologies if anyone felt it was.

Re: The iPhone Ad You'll Never See

Yeah I know what you mean about iPhones being the latest must-haves. Most people who I know who have them don't even know half the stuff it can do!

Sorry about causing conflict, I hope you enjoy your HTC! One things for sure, the HTCs are definitely getting better each year!

As far as phones go they are all the same, but...... as far as gadgets go, well..... the iPhone takes the cake anyday of the week, the only people that dont like iPhones are the ones that

A) Cant afford them
B) Use them as only a phone
C) Dont know the full potential of them

D) Find that the iPhone doesn't do what they need like it to
Possibly a little more accurate....

Seeing as you put the "Can't afford it" first, you seem to think an iPhone is an elitist object that should only be owned by the few... I'd rather you didn't stoop to those levels, but it's a free forum, all views are valid. I've got a Land Rover habit that costs more per month than an iPhone would... affording it isn't the problem, it simply doesn't do what I'd need it to, nothing more, nothing less.

Apologies, as I said, to all the iPhone users who don't feel they are above the rest of us, but Mr Worm's reply was even more crass than my joke about them dropping calls.

Re: The iPhone Ad You'll Never See

Great little vid and so true. I love my iPhone, best phone I have ever used (after years of symbian and windows mobile). But that was very funny, and spot on. Two of my biggest bugbears are signal strengh and flicking though screen after screen to find the app I want, it so out of date now. That said, it's still the best phone overall IMO.

Don't take life so seriously, they are just phones.

if you think its just a phone then your really not using it right - phone is about half way down the list of my most used features.

As a say to people who comment on it - "everything else is just a phone"

and that its biggest drawback. the name is wrong pure and simple. If i wanted a phone i could have paid £20 at tescos.

If i wanted a way to carry my online life around with me and syncronise all my personal wrok data as well as following my favorite football team, playing games, checking games reviews while i stand in Game browsing, checking the best prices for a whole host of things while out shopping so i'm sure I can bag a bargain, booking tickets, checking the train times, checking the traffic, seeing the latest pictures of my grandaughter on facebook, following friends on twitter, checking out the latest news, controlling my music library from the sofa with remote, keeping track of my spending with my finance apps that tell me how much i have spent and how much i have left, checking my account balance, keeping track of my to do list, my email, my diary, the weather (chelsea tone will like that one ) using google maps and street view when i'm out of town, location based servces so i can find hotels resturants, train stations, taxis, having news pushed to my phone - football scores as they happen without me checking, watching iPlayer, movies, music, podcasts, porn, cinema times, countless games of every type. i could go on my my fingers are hurting......

oh and its a phone.

as i say if you think its just a phone then your really not using it right

Re: The iPhone Ad You'll Never See

However you term it, it's still just a phone (even though it has added bells and whistles), the LG990 was a phone, camera, MP3 player and (sort of) PDA, but, esentially, it's still a phone. Without the telecomms part, it would still be an interesting gadget, but there are many out there that will do the movies and music bit (Archos for example, and they have the streaming capabilities on some models).

iPod's are competent MP3 players, but there are others out there that sound better, hold more, and are better value, but don't have the cachet that an iPod does, so iPod's still sell.

The iPhone is something that caught the zeitgeist, it's fashionable, it's trendy, therefore, it's desirable.

It may run your life, or at least hold it in it's little silicon innards, but to say it's more than just a phone is buying into the hype.

However you term it, it's still just a phone (even though it has added bells and whistles), the LG990 was a phone, camera, MP3 player and (sort of) PDA, but, esentially, it's still a phone. The Veiwty is an awful device one of the worst interfaces ever, a camera that pretends it was good by playing the megapixel game and an unuseable MP3 player

Without the telecomms part, it would still be an interesting gadget, but there are many out there that will do the movies and music bit (Archos for example, and they have the streaming capabilities on some models). yes there are others but there are none with the all round useability of the iPhone and NOTHING THAT CAN DO WHAT IT CAN DO.

iPod's are competent MP3 players, but there are others out there that sound better, hold more, and are better value, but don't have the cachet that an iPod does, so iPod's still sell. yes but there are NONE that can do what the iPhone can do. I bought my first MP3 player a decade ago - the Creative 6gb looked like a CD player cant remember the model. You seem to be suggesting is that i take an mp3, a camera phone and a PDA around with all day? I'd rather take one simple device.

The iPhone is something that caught the zeitgeist, it's fashionable, it's trendy, therefore, it's desirable. And why is that? because its the best all rounder money can buy. if it was rubbish it would have been a flash in pan, but its not. Why have all the other networks begged Apple for it? because it sells and its the best.

It may run your life, or at least hold it in it's little silicon innards, but to say it's more than just a phone is buying into the hype. Buying into the hype! how can it be hype if it does what says it does? Hype is a Michael Bay movie! As you say its runs my life - so therefore its not hype is it? You can ignore everything i wrote if you like, but the iPhone is the best device on the market. I resisted the iPhone for 8 months i went through around 10 devices to find one that suited - Blackberry's (i have storm sitting my office draw another woeful attempt at an "iPhone killer"), Samsungs, the previously mentioned Veiwty (that lasted 4 days is was so rubbish) Nokia's, E and N's, the G1 android (oh my god that was a mistake - the keyboard was awful) but i couldn't find a device that suited me, so i decided to buy an iPhone second hand. Within 2 days it had cemented its place in my life. And the 3G laid even more claim to my life. My current 3G is my 37th mobile in 10 years it is a quantum leap in mobile technology and every other company is trying to play catch up.

the iPhone is the best device on the market and there ins NOTHING coming along that will change that. My next phone will be an iPhone unless something comes along but has i'm student of these things i've seen NOTHING from any other manufacter that will change that.

I'm an iPhone fanboy (and Apple hater), i admit that openly to anyone but only because it is the best you can buy. you can call it a phone if you like but you need to boarden your horizons and see what this baby can do. If your HTC can do a 10th of what the iPhone can i'll eat my hat - but that bet is safe as i know and you know it cant.

Enjoy WinMo - christ MS even bought the interface from the hackers because they couldn't design a useable one themselves.
I had that interface on my Orbit 2 years ago.

Enjoy

G

Re: The iPhone Ad You'll Never See

Oh dear....

I think you're frothing at the mouth slightly.

You didn't like the 990, no probs, the music was 4 menu's down, which made it a nuisance, but only the first time you access it that day... The camera wasn't that bad, for a phone.

If you READ (I can shout too) what I put, I wasn't suggesting that you carry three devices round, that's why I started getting phones that played MP3's, so I didn't miss a call when I was listening to music.

The iPhone seems to fit your life, great, good for you, glad you like it. It doesn't fit mine as it will not do what I'd need it to do, i.e. let me listen to music, let me call my wife and give me acces to MemoryMap when I need it.

The ranting does not change the simple fact that it's a phone, it's got toys on it, you can organise your meetings, you can find a taxi, you can listen to music, you can find some 'interesting people' in your vicinity (according to Stephen Fry) if you so wish. Apparently, you can even play games on it .

By the way, anyone out there wanting OS mapping on an iPhone.... try this.

OS Explore not sure if it's any use, but it's there if you need it.

The iPhone is still a phone. Would you have bought one if you couldn't call people on it? Seeing as you'd rather not carry more than one device....
