iPhone causing iTunes to Freeze

Hey guys. I bought a 3GS just after launch but at the time, i was in my parents house, and did not have access to my pc. It has been a couple of months, but I have finally got both together. Only problem is, that iTunes wont recognise the phone. When I connect it to the PC, it makes the connection sound, the phone starts charging, iTunes opens but doesn't give me any options for the phone, and then freezes. If i go into task manager, it says that iTunes is not responding. If I remove the iPhone, it imediatly starts responding again.

Have tried rebooting both the PC and phone and tried several usb ports, but still no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Also, when I connect the iPhone, Vista comes up with the following AutoPlay options:

Device Options.

Import Pictures using Windows.
Import Pictures and Videos using Windows Live Photo Gallery
Open Device to view files using windows explorer.

No option for iTunes.

Would my pc have installed some drivers that are getting in the way by any chance?

Re: iPhone causing iTunes to Freeze

Have you tried it on another PC?

Try deleting all the apps off you iPhone it may be a corrupt App causing it.

Failing that I suggest taking it to an Apple Store.

No, havn't tried deleting apps. Don't want to have to do that as any of the apps which I paid for, are not registered to my account until I sync it with my PC. Have paid for a few so don't want to loose them.

You wont lose any apps, they are registered with your iTunes account if you purchased them on your phone.

Thanks Hutch. It's just, I could sware I got a warning when I was downloading paid apps, that if I deleted the app, before syncing it, I would loose it?

Re: iPhone causing iTunes to Freeze

I had a similar problem and found that it was my Zonealarm firewall software causing the problem.

Disabling ZoneAlarm then permits the phone and iTunes to talk.

Might be worth looking into.

Re: iPhone causing iTunes to Freeze

I get the same problem and have done since the update before last.

I get round it by starting Itunes first, downloading any podcasts etc, and then connect my iPhone (3GS). It's slow to recognize it but it does eventually kick in and I can then sync ok. Can take a good couple of minutes for the iPhone to be recognized. During this time task manager says Itunes is not responding.

Maybe try that to see if it helps.

Re: iPhone causing iTunes to Freeze

I too have had this problem and believe it was caused by the podcasts I downloaded directly to the iPhone. I deleted all the recent downloads and itunes recognised the iPhone again.

Good luck.
